Interchangeable pants closure system

Abstract

A button-type fastener for a garment has an easily changeable appearance. The fastener is a button head connected with a grommet post and base for securing through a grommet in an article of clothing. The button head and base are separable from each other for changing the button head to one with a different appearance. In an alternate embodiment, button head covers are provided for changing the appearance of the button head.

1 . An interchangeable fastener for a garment having an opening defined by two overlying panels, each panel having an opening therethrough, the openings being aligned with each other, the fastener comprising: 
 a button head having a shank extending from a rear side of the button head;    a base mounted to one end of a post, the post being removably connected with the shank.    
   
   
       2 . An interchangeable fastener according to  claim 1 , further comprising a grommet for rigidly fixing a size of one of the panel openings, the connected post and shank being sized to pass through the grommet.  
   
   
       3 . An interchangeable fastener according to  claim 1 , wherein the button head includes an ornamental design on a front surface thereof.  
   
   
       4 . An interchangeable fastener according to  claim 1 , wherein the shank and post are connected via one of a threaded connection and a snap-fit.  
   
   
       5 . An interchangeable fastener according to  claim 1 , further comprising a removable cover fitted over the button head.  
   
   
       6 . A fastener for a garment closure having a pair of overlapping panels defining aligned openings, the fastener comprising a button head with a post extending from a rear surface of the button head and a base with a shank, the shank being detachably connected with the post through one of the aligned openings, whereby the button head is sized to fit through the other of the aligned openings.  
   
   
       7 . A fastener according to  claim 6 , further comprising a second button head having a post extending from the rear and interchangeable with the first button head for connecting with the shank.  
   
   
       8 . A fastener according to  claim 7 , further comprising a cover removably covering the button head connected to the shank.  
   
   
       9 . A fastener system for a garment having a pair of overlapping layers forming a closable body opening of the garment, the layers each defining one of a pair of aligned openings, the fastener system comprising: 
 a grommet for rigidly defining one of the aligned openings and having a center opening with a grommet opening diameter;    a first button head having a post extending from a rear surface; and    a base having a shank extending from one surface, the post and shank being removably connected with each other through the center opening, the base and button head each having a diameter greater than the grommet opening diameter.    
   
   
       10 . A fastener system according to  claim 9 , further comprising a second button head and post for interchanging with the first button head and post.  
   
   
       11 . A fastener system according to  claim 9 , further comprising a button head cover fitted over the first button head.  
   
   
       12 . A decorative cover for a fastener comprising a button head and a post supporting the button head, the button head being inserted through a button hole of a garment for closing a body opening of the garment, the decorative cover comprising a panel for covering substantially all of the button head and means for securely supporting the panel over the button head.  
   
   
       13 . A decorative cover according to  claim 12 , wherein the decorative cover has substantially the same shape as the button head.  
   
   
       14 . A decorative cover according to  claim 12 , wherein the panel bears a design.
