Abstract

A visible light characteristic changing layer is formed in a location which can be viewed from a part of a label surface of an optical medium. The optical medium is set on a turntable of an optical disk unit, which may be rotated at a constant angular velocity, while the power of a laser beam is modulated in accordance with image data. The optical pickup operates at a first power level when changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium to form the visible information and the optical pickup operates at a lower power level when not changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium. As a result, a visible-light reflectivity of the visible light characteristic changing layer is changed, thereby forming a image corresponding to the image data on the label surface. A tracking servo operation is turned off while the optical pickup forms the visible information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first constant angular velocity is maintained while the optical pickup moves a defined amount in a radial direction.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the defined amount extends across a label surface of the optical medium.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical pickup operates at a first power level when changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium to form the visible information and the optical pickup operates at a lower power level when not changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a tracking servo operation is turned off while the optical pickup forms the visible information.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the laser beam is a CD laser beam.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the laser beam has a wavelength of 780 nm.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the acts of:
generating a frequency pulse related to the rotation of the optical medium; and controlling, based on the frequency pulse, the rotation of a motor that rotates the optical medium in order to maintain the first constant angular velocity.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical medium is a CD-type optical disk.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical medium is a DVD-type optical disk.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical medium includes a guide groove which is used while writing data on the optical medium.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical medium includes a guide groove, and the visible information is formed independent of the guide groove.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the act of forming the visible information, comprises the act of:
 heating the optical medium.
