Disclosed herein are methods for diagnosing cancer in a biological sample comprising measuring the level of a p63 gene product in the sample.

         11 . A kit for detecting a p63 protein or transcript, comprising: 
 (a) a sample collecting means; and    (b) a p63 PCR primer pair, probe or antibody.    
     
     
         12 . A kit of  claim 11 , wherein said primer pair is selected from the group comprising TAp63-specific primer pair and a ΔNp63-specific primer pair.

         15 . An antibody that binds specifically to a p63 protein.  
     
     
         16 . A method for detecting a p63 protein or transcript in a biological sample, comprising: 
 (a) providing a biological sample; and    (b) contacting the biological sample or portion thereof with a p63 PCR primer pair, probe or antibody.
