Abstract
A bandpass filter containing specific red dyes alone or in combination with other dyes selectively transmits predetermined primary color wavelengths as well as selectively absorbs wavelengths other than the predetermined primary color wavelength. The filter is particularly useful for enhancing the contrast of color plasma displays by absorbing visible light emitted at 590 nm from the display.

34 . A plasma display device having an image enhancement filter present on a display surface thereof,
wherein the image enhancement filter comprises at least one red dye capable of absorbing visible light at 590 nm; and wherein the dye has less than 20% degradation after exposure to 85 MJ/m 2 of white light in the region of 400-700 nm and less than 20% degradation after heating at 70° C. at 70% relative humidity for 72 hours.
35 . The plasma display device of claim 34 , wherein the dye has less than 10% degradation after exposure to 85 MJ/m 2 at from 400 to 700 nm.
36 . The plasma display device of claim 34 , wherein the dye has less than 10% degradation after heating at 70° C. at 70% relative humidity for 72 hours.
37 . The plasma device of claim 34 , wherein the dye has less than 10% degradation after exposure to 85 MJ/m 2 of white light at from 400 to 700 nm and less than 10% degradation after heating at 70° C. at 70% relative humidity for 72 hours.
38 . The plasma device of claim 34 , wherein the image enhancement filter has at least one absorption (λ1) of an electromagnetic spectrum emitted or reflected from the plasma display device, said absorption (λ1) falling in the following region (A);
550 nm<λ1<610 nm (A), wherein the bandwidth of the absorption (λ1) is within the range 30 to 35 nm.
39 . The plasma display device according to claim 38 , wherein the image enhancement filter absorbs at least 50% of the electromagnetic spectrum at the absorption (λ1).
40 . The plasma display device of claim 34 , wherein the image enhancement filter comprises a polyacrylate matrix.
41 . The plasma display device of claim 38 , wherein the bandwidth of the absorption (λ1) is within the range 30 to 33 nm.
42 . A plasma display device having an image enhancement filter present on a display surface thereof,
wherein the image enhancement filter comprises at least one red dye having an absorption at 590 nm; and wherein the filter has a figure of merits of 0.9137 or greater and absorbs at least 50% of light emitted by the plasma display device at 590 nm.
43 . The plasma display device according to claim 42 , wherein the image enhancement filter has a relative contrast of 1.47 or greater.
44 . The plasma device according to claim 42 , wherein the image enhancement filter is spun coated onto the display surface of the plasma display device.
45 . The plasma display device according to claim 42 , wherein the image enhancement filter comprises the dye in a polyacrylate matrix.
46 . The plasma display device according to claim 42 , wherein the image enhancement filter has a relative contrast of 1.57 or greater.
47 . The plasma display device according to claim 42 , wherein the image enhancement filter comprises at least two dyes having different absorptions in the region from 550 to 610 nm.
48 . The plasma device of claim 47 , wherein the image enhancement filter has at least one absorption (λ1) of an electromagnetic spectrum emitted or reflected from the plasma display device, said absorption (λ1) falling in the following region (A);
