Claims

Abstract

A table having at least one footrest that is movable between extended and retracted positions is disclosed. The footrest can be moved to the extended position to provide a support surface for an individual to rest their feet thereon. The footrest is movable to the retracted position to be out of the way and to provide a desired appearance for the table. The table includes a stationary top surface that can be used to support objects placed thereon. The footrest and top surface can be used simultaneously.

1 . A table comprising: 
 a frame;    a stationary substantially planar top surface coupled to said frame, said top surface operable to support objects placed thereon; and    a moveable footrest coupled to said frame and moveable between extended and retracted positions, said footrest forming a substantially horizontal supporting surface operable to support a foot when in said extended position and said footrest being inoperable to support one or more feet when in said retracted position,    wherein said top surface and said footrest can be used simultaneously when said footrest is in said extended position.    
   
   
       2 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest moves linearly between said extended and retracted positions.  
   
   
       3 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest slides between said extended and retracted positions.  
   
   
       4 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said frame includes at least three legs.  
   
   
       5 . The table of  claim 1 , further comprising a lower support surface disposed below said top surface and operable to support an object placed thereon.  
   
   
       6 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest is stowed beneath said top surface when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       7 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest is visible when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       8 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest is hidden from view when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       9 . The table of  claim 8 , wherein said footrest is hidden from view behind a false drawer front when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       10 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest is one of a plurality of moveable footrests coupled to said frame.  
   
   
       11 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest includes a padded surface covered with upholstery.  
   
   
       12 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest includes a loose pillow positioned on a top surface of said footrest.  
   
   
       13 . The table of  claim 1 , further comprising a guide member operable to guide movement of said footrest between its extended and retracted positions.  
   
   
       14 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said frame includes a cavity and said footrest resides in said cavity when in its retracted position.  
   
   
       15 . The table of  claim 1 , wherein said footrest projects outwardly, in plan view, beyond said top surface between about 2 inches to about 14 inches when in said extended position.  
   
   
       16 . The table of  claim 15 , wherein said footrest projects outwardly, in plan view, beyond said top surface between about 4 inches to about 10 inches when in said extended position.  
   
   
       17 . The table of  claim 1 , further comprising a removable support surface disposed above and supported by said top surface and operable to support an object placed thereon.  
   
   
       18 . A table comprising: 
 a support structure operable to support components of the table in a spaced relation;    at least one cavity in said support structure;    at least one footrest coupled to said support structure and moveable between extended and retracted positions, said footrest residing within said cavity when in said retracted position and said footrest extending outwardly from said cavity when in said extended position, and said footrest being operable to support one or more feet when in the extended position and inoperable to support a foot when in said retracted position;    a guide member coupling said footrest to said support structure, said guide member operable to guide movement of said footrest between said extended and retracted positions; and    a stationary top surface operable to support an object placed thereon regardless of a position of said footrest.    
   
   
       19 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein said at least one footrest is one of a plurality of footrests coupled to said support structure.  
   
   
       20 . The table of  claim 19 , wherein said at least one cavity is one of a plurality of cavities and each footrest resides in a single associated cavity.  
   
   
       21 . The table of  claim 19 , wherein at least two footrests extend and retract into and out of cavities on opposing sides of said support structure.  
   
   
       22 . The table of  claim 19 , wherein at least two footrests extend and retract into and out of a same side of said support structure.  
   
   
       23 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein said footrest projects laterally outwardly beyond said top surface between about 2 inches to about 14 inches when in said extended position.  
   
   
       24 . The table of  claim 23 , wherein said footrest projects laterally outwardly beyond said top surface between about 4 inches to about 10 inches when in said extended position.  
   
   
       25 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein a side of said footrest is visible when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       26 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein said footrest is hidden from view when in said retracted position.  
   
   
       27 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein said footrest includes a padded surface covered with upholstery.  
   
   
       28 . The table of  claim 18 , wherein said footrest includes a loose pillow disposed on a top surface of said footrest, said pillow moving with said footrest between said extended and retracted positions.
