Abstract
A recording and/or reproducing apparatus, a recording and/or reproducing method, and an information storage medium, wherein the recording and/or reproducing apparatus includes: a writing and/or reading unit writing data to or reading data from an information storage medium having one or more information recording layers; and a control unit controlling the writing and/or reading unit to write the data to the information storage medium by referring to one or more disk information structures including recording related parameter information corresponding to recording characteristics of the information storage medium, and recording characteristic information to which the recording related parameters are applied. According to the apparatus and method, parameters of recording characteristics appropriate to a recording and/or reproducing apparatus and compatibility between different specifications can be achieved.

a writing and/or reading unit writing data to and/or reading the data from an information storage medium having one or more information recording layers; and a control unit controlling the writing and/or reading unit to write the data on the information storage medium by referring to one or more disk information structures including information of recording related parameters corresponding to recording characteristics of the information storage medium, and information of the recording characteristics to which the recording related parameters are applied.
2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the information of the recording characteristics includes at least one of a recording speed, a recording layer, or write strategy (WS) indication information.
3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the recording speed and the recording layer included in the information of the recording characteristics indicate a recording speed and a recording layer to which recording related parameters in the disk information structure are applied.
4 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a WS of the recording related parameters in the disk information structure.
5 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a combination of a predetermined WS and predetermined functions irrelevant to the WS.
6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the information storage medium is any one of a reproduction dedicated type, a rewritable type, or a write once type.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein in order to obtain the recording related parameters appropriate to the recording and/or reproducing apparatus, the control unit further finds the information of the recording characteristics of the recording and/or reproducing apparatus from the information of the recording characteristics included in the one or more disk information structures.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control unit further determines a recording characteristic appropriate to the recording and/or reproducing apparatus, finds a disk information structure including the determined recording characteristic from the one or more disk information structures, and controls the writing and/or reading unit to write the data to the information storage medium using the recording related parameters included in the found disk information structure.
9 . A method of recording and/or reproducing data on and/or from an information storage medium having one or more information recording layers, the method comprising:
recording data on the information storage medium by referring to one or more disk information structures including information of recording related parameters corresponding to recording characteristics of the information storage medium, and information of the recording characteristics to which the recording related parameters are applied.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the information of the recording characteristics includes at least one of a recording speed, a recording layer, and WS indication information.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the recording speed and the recording layer included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a recording speed and a recording layer to which the recording related parameters in the disk information structure are applied.
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a WS of the recording related parameters in the disk information structure.
13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a combination of a predetermined WS and predetermined functions irrelevant to the WS.
14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the information storage medium is any one of a reproduction dedicated type, a rewritable type, or a write once type.

The method of claim 9 , wherein in recording the data, in order to obtain the recording related parameters appropriate to the recording and/or reproducing apparatus, the information of the recording characteristics of the recording and/or reproducing apparatus is found from the information of the recording characteristics included in the one or more disk information structures.
16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the recording of the data comprises:
determining a recording characteristic appropriate to the recording and/or reproducing apparatus; finding a disk information structure including the determined recording characteristic, from the one or more disk information structures; and recording data on the information storage medium by using recording related parameters included in the found disk information structure.
17 . An information storage medium having one or more information recording layers wherein one or more disk information structures including information of recording related parameters corresponding to recording characteristics of the information storage medium, and information of the recording characteristics to which the recording related parameters are applied are recorded in a predetermined area of the information storage medium.
18 . The information storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the information of the recording characteristics includes at least one of a recording speed, a recording layer, and WS indication information.
19 . The information storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the recording speed and the recording layer included in the information of the recording characteristics indicate a recording speed and a recording layer to which recording related parameters in the disk information structure can be applied.
20 . The information storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a WS of the recording related parameters in the disk information structure.
21 . The information storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the WS indication information included in the information of the recording characteristics indicates a combination of a predetermined WS and predetermined functions irrelevant to the WS.
22 . The information storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the information storage medium is any one of a reproduction dedicated type, a rewritable type, and a write once type.
23 . The information storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the one or more disk information structures are recorded in a control area of the information storage medium.
24 . The information storage medium of claim 23 , wherein the control area is a pre-recorded zone located in a lead-in area of the information storage medium.
25 . The information storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the one or more disk information structures include a common information table, a parameter recognition information table, and a parameter table.
26 . The information storage medium of claim 25 , wherein the common information table includes a type of the information storage medium, a number of information storage layers, and a supported recording speed.
27 . The information storage medium of claim 25 , wherein the parameter recognition information table includes a recording speed, a recording layer and a write strategy (WS) indication information.
28 . The information storage medium of claim 25 , wherein the parameter table includes an initial pulse cycle (Ttop), a middle pulse cycle (Tmp), an end pulse cycle (Tcl), a recording power (Pw), a delete power (Pe), and a bias power (Pb).
29 . A method of recording and/or reproducing data on and/or from a disk having one or more information recording layers, the method comprising:
determining a recording environment appropriate to the drive system; reading disk information structures recorded on a disk information area of the disk and finding a parameter recognition information table containing same information as the determined recording environment; reading recording related parameters from the parameter recognition information table; and setting the drive system to a set parameter and controlling the drive system such that data is recorded on the disk at the set parameter.
30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the disk system knows which write strategy (WS) the disk information structures desire to apply, from write strategy indication information without reading the recording related parameters stored in the parameter recognition information table.
31 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the parameter recognition information table includes which recording speed, recording layer, and write strategy are recorded in a parameter table of a disk information structure.
32 . A computer readable medium encoded with processing instructions performing a method of recording and/or reproducing data on and/or from a disk having one or more information recording layers, the method comprising:
