Abstract

A communications system for general business environments that exploits knowledge of user state to provide advantages of efficiency and control for individual users and for the business. The communications system also provides particular advantages in environments where users have multiple communication devices and for communications of a business with external parties. In other aspects, the communication system provides features of application flexibility and system fault-tolerance with broad applicability to communication systems.

1 . A system for communications between users comprising: 
 plural users, and    a controller that 
 monitors the states of the users,  
 responds to a change of state for a first user of the plural users by generating a request for the establishment of a communication among a group of two or more of the plural users, and  
 establishes the requested communication when at least one of the users is in an appropriate state for the requested communication to take place.  
   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when at least one of the users in the group is in an appropriate state for participating in the requested communication.  
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when each of the users in the group is in an appropriate state for participating in the requested communication.  
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the group includes the first user.  
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the group does not include the first user.  
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the first user has a communication function.  
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the first user has no communication function.  
     
     
         8 . A system for communications between users comprising: 
 a project,    plural users, and    a controller that 
 monitors the states of the users and the state of the project,  
 responds to a change of state for the project by generating a request for establishment of a communication among a group of two or more of the plural users, and  
 establishes the requested communication in response to a change in the state of a user or a subsequent change in the state of the project.  
   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 8  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when at least one of the users is in an appropriate state for the requested communication to take place.  
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 8  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when at least one of the users in the group is in an appropriate state for participating in the requested communication.  
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 8  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when each of the users in the group is in an appropriate state for participating in the requested communication.  
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 8  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when the project is in an appropriate state for the requested communication to take place.  
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 8  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication when a user and the project are each in an appropriate state for the requested communication to take place.  
     
     
         14 . A system for communications between users comprising: 
 plural users, and    a controller that 
 monitors the states of the users,  
 receives a request for establishment of communication among two or more of the plural users, and  
 responds to a change of state for a user by modifying handling of the requested communication.  
   
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14  wherein the controller establishes the requested communication after waiting for a condition to be satisfied.  
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the condition relates to the state of a user identified to participate in the requested communication.  
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the condition relates to the state of a user who is not identified to participate in the requested communication.  
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the condition does not relate to the state of a user.  
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 15  wherein modifying includes deactivating the requested communication, such that it will not be established even if the condition is satisfied.  
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 19  wherein modifying includes activating a deactivated requested communication.  
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 15  wherein modifying includes changing the condition.  
     
     
         22 . The system of  claim 14  wherein modifying includes establishing or changing a priority for the requested communication.
