Drywall joint fixture and method

Abstract

A drywall-joint fixture has a drywall-joint cover ( 1, 33, 37, 42 ) that can be attached to a drywall arch, wall flat or other drywall structure after a first sheet ( 3 ) and a second sheet ( 4 ) of drywall of the drywall joint are positioned on wall framework ( 5, 35, 39 ) of a building. A paper face ( 49 ) that is resistant to sanding is positioned on the drywall-joint cover. The drywall-joint cover includes a first side ( 6 ), a second side ( 7 ) and an attachment flange ( 8 ). The attachment flange is extended orthogonally from an inside surface of either the first side or the second side and is longer than a side opposite from which it is extended for receiving fastener shanks ( 12 ) that are stuck through sheets and into a wall framework. A selection of shapes are provided for differing wall structures. A method includes using the attachment flange to maintain the drywall-joint cover in place.

1 . A drywall-joint fixture comprising: 
 a drywall-joint cover that is articulated for covering a predetermined drywall joint of a first sheet of drywall and a second sheet of drywall of the drywall joint after the first sheet and the second sheet of drywall of the drywall joint are positioned on wall framework of a building;    a paper face that is resistant to sanding on the drywall-joint cover;    a first side of the drywall-joint cover for covering a predetermined first-edge area on the first sheet a second side of the drywall-joint cover for covering a predetermined second-edge area on the second sheet;    an attachment flange that is predeterminedly rigid and extended from an inside surface of the second side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being predeterminedly longer than and parallel to the first side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being articulated for being inserted intermediate a first-sheet edge of the first sheet and a second-sheet edge the second sheet;    the attachment flange being articulated further for being inserted intermediate the first-sheet edge of the first sheet and a framework wall of the wall framework;    the first side having a first cover step for matching height of wall-finishing material on the first side and for providing joint strength; and    the second side having a second cover step for matching height of wall-finishing material on the second side and for providing joint strength. and    the attachment flange being articulated further for being penetrable by fastener shanks which are driven through fastener-edge area that is adjacent to the first-edge area of the of the first sheet of drywall, then through the attachment flange and then into the wall framework proximate the framework wall of the wall framework for maintaining the drywall-joint cover in a covering position on the drywall joint.    
     
     
         2 . A drywall-joint fixture comprising: 
 the drywall-joint cover that is articulated for covering the predetermined drywall joint of the first sheet of drywall and the second sheet of drywall of the drywall joint after the first sheet and the second sheet of drywall of the drywall joint are positioned on wall framework of the building;    a paper face that is resistant to sanding on the drywall-joint cover;    the first side of the drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined first-edge area on the first sheet    the second side of the drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined second-edge area on the second sheet;    the attachment flange that is predeterminedly rigid and extended from an inside surface of the first predetermined side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being predeterminedly longer than and parallel to the second predetermined side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being articulated for being inserted intermediate the first-sheet edge and the second-sheet edge;    the attachment flange being articulated further for being inserted intermediate the first-sheet edge and the framework wall of the wall framework; and    the attachment flange being articulated further for being penetrable by fastener shanks for maintaining the drywall-joint cover in the covering position on the drywall joint.    
     
     
         3 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover is articulated predeterminedly for application of predetermined surfacing material.    
     
     
         4 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 3  wherein: 
 the surfacing material includes surfacing mud; and    at least a portion of the second side includes porosity for receiving portions of the surfacing mud.    
     
     
         5 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 4  wherein: 
 the portion of the second side which includes the porosity includes porous net material.    
     
     
         6 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 4  wherein: 
 the portion of the second side which includes the porosity includes mud apertures.    
     
     
         7 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 3 , wherein: 
 the surfacing material includes surfacing mud; and    at least a portion of the first side includes porosity for receiving portions of the surfacing mud.    
     
     
         8 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 4  wherein: 
 the portion of the first side which includes the porosity includes the porous net material.    
     
     
         9 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 4  wherein: 
 the portion of the first side which includes the porosity includes the mud apertures.    
     
     
         10 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover is articulated for being surfaced with wall paper.    
     
     
         11 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover includes fiberglass sheeting.    
     
     
         12 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover includes an L-leg second side having a length for covering a predetermined length of the second sheet.    
     
     
         13 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover includes a wall-end second side that is common to two of the drywall-joint covers for covering a length of the second sheet intermediate two of the first sheets that are spaced apart.    
     
     
         14 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the drywall-joint cover includes a bull-nose arcuate corner intermediate the first side and the second side for covering vacant space and arcuate drywall edges selectively intermediate the first sheet and the second sheet.    
     
     
         15 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the attachment flange includes articulation for being glued to the framework wall of the wall framework for maintaining the drywall-joint cover in a covering position on the drywall joint.    
     
     
         16 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  wherein: 
 the attachment flange is articulated additionally for being glued to the first sheet, to the second sheet and to the wall framework selectively.    
     
     
         20 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2  and further comprising: 
 a wall-end second side that is common to a first drywall-joint cover and to a second drywall-joint cover for covering a length of the second sheet intermediate the first drywall-joint cover and the second drywall-joint cover.    
     
     
         21 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 20  and further comprising: 
 the bull-nose arcuate corner intermediate the first side and the second side of the first drywall-joint cover for covering vacant space and arcuate drywall edges selectively intermediate the first sheet and the second sheet proximate the first drywall-joint cover; and    the bull-nose arcuate corner intermediate the first side and the second side of the second drywall-joint cover for covering vacant space and arcuate drywall edges selectively intermediate the first sheet and the second sheet proximate the second drywall-joint cover.    
     
     
         22 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 21  wherein: 
 the wall-end second side, the bull-nose arcuate corner proximate the first drywall-joint cover, the bull-nose arcuate corner proximate the second drywall-joint cover, the first side of the first drywall-joint cover and the first side of the second drywall-joint cover are articulated for receiving predetermined wall-finishing material.    
     
     
         23 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 22  and further comprising: 
 a wall-end first side that is common to the first drywall-joint cover and to a second drywall-joint cover for covering a length of the first sheet intermediate the first drywall-joint cover and the second drywall-joint cover.    
     
     
         24 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 22  wherein: 
 the wall-end first side, the bull-nose arcuate corner proximate the first drywall-joint cover, the bull-nose arcuate corner proximate the second drywall-joint cover, the first side of the first drywall-joint cover and the first side of the second drywall-joint cover are articulated for receiving the predetermined wall-finishing material.    
     
     
         25 . A drywall-joint fixture comprising: 
 an inside drywall-joint cover that is articulated for covering a predetermined inside drywall joint of the first sheet of drywall and the second sheet of drywall of the inside drywall joint after the first sheet and the second sheet of drywall of the inside drywall joint are positioned on inside wall framework of a building;    a paper face that is resistant to sanding on the drywall-joint cover;    the first side of the inside drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined first-edge area on the first sheet;    the second side of the drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined second-edge area on the second sheet;    the attachment flange that is predeterminedly rigid and extended from an inside surface of a predetermined side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being predeterminedly longer than and parallel to the first side of the drywall-joint cover;    the attachment flange being articulated for being inserted intermediate the first-sheet edge and the second-sheet edge; and    the attachment flange being articulated further for being penetrable by fastener shanks and for being glued selectively for maintaining the drywall-joint cover in a covering position on the inside drywall joint.    
     
     
         26 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 25  wherein: 
 the inside drywall-joint cover includes a concave corner intermediate the first side the attachment flange is positioned intermediate edges of the first sheet and the second sheet.    
     
     
         27 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 26  wherein: 
 the attachment flange is positioned on the first-sheet edge which is intermediate edges of the first sheet and the second sheet.    
     
     
         28 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 26  wherein: 
 the attachment flange is positioned on the second-sheet edge intermediate edges of the first sheet and the second sheet.    
     
     
         29 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 25  and further comprising: 
 an inside-wall edge extended intermediate the first side and the attachment flange.    
     
     
         30 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 25  and further comprising: 
 an inside-wall edge extended intermediate the second side and the attachment flange.    
     
     
         31 . A drywall-joint fixture comprising: 
 a juxtapositional drywall-joint cover that is articulated for covering a predeterminedly juxtapositional drywall joint of the first sheet of drywall and the second sheet of drywall of the juxtapositional drywall joint that are predeterminedly juxtaposed after the first sheet and the second sheet of drywall of the juxtapositional drywall joint are juxtaposed on juxtapositional wall framework of the building;    a paper face that is resistant to sanding on the drywall-joint cover;    the first side of the juxtapositional drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined first-edge area on the first sheet;    the second side of the juxtapositional drywall-joint cover for covering the predetermined second-edge area on the second sheet;    a juxtapositional-attachment flange extended intermediate interfacing walls of the first side and the second side of the juxtapositional drywall-joint cover;    the second side being predeterminedly longer than the first side of the juxtapositional drywall-joint cover;    the juxtapositional-attachment flange being articulated for being inserted intermediate the first-sheet edge and the second-sheet edge;    the second side being articulated for penetration by fastener shanks driven through the first side and through the second side and into the juxtapositional wall framework selectively for maintaining the juxtapositional drywall-joint cover in the covering position on the juxtapositional drywall joint.    
     
     
         32 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 31  wherein: 
 the first side is articulated to be covered by the wall-finishing material.    
     
     
         33 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 31  wherein: 
 the first sheet and the second sheet are predeterminedly juxtaposed at an acute angle; and    the fastener shanks are positioned orthogonally in a cap backer and in the juxtapositional wall framework.    
     
     
         34 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 31  wherein: 
 the first sheet and the second sheet are predeterminedly juxtaposed at an acute angle; and    the fastener shanks are positioned orthogonally in the first sheet, the second sheet and the juxtapositional wall framework.    
     
     
         35 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 31  wherein: 
 the first sheet and the second sheet are predeterminedly juxtaposed at an obtuse angle; and    the fastener shanks are positioned orthogonally in the first sheet, the second sheet and the juxtapositional wall framework.    
     
     
         36 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 31  wherein: 
 the first sheet and the second sheet are predeterminedly juxtaposed at a straight angle; and    the fastener shanks are positioned orthogonally in the second side;    the cap backer is extended from opposite ends of the second side; and    the juxtapositional attachment frame is attached to the cap backer.    
     
     
         37 . A drywall-joint fixture comprising: 
 a dual drywall-joint cover having an attachment base that is orthogonal to a first attachment flange and a second attachment flange that are extended from an attachment side of the attachment base;    a paper face that is resistant to sanding on the drywall-joint cover;    a first cover wall extended from proximate a first end of the attachment base;    a second cover wall extended from proximate a second end of the attachment base; and    the first cover wall and the second cover wall being predeterminedly shorter than the first attachment flange and the second attachment flange in distance of extension from the attachment base.    
     
     
         38 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 37  and further comprising: 
 slots in an end of at least the first cover wall.    
     
     
         39 . The drywall-joint fixture of  claim 37  and further comprising: 
 slots in an end of at least the first attachment flange.    
     
     
         40 . A method comprising the following steps for using the drywall-joint fixture of  claim 2:   affixing the first sheet and the second sheet of the drywall to the wall framework;    allowing a predetermined amount of space to remain between a side of the first sheet and an end edge of the second sheet of the drywall when being affixed to the wall framework;    inserting the attachment flange into the space allowed to remain between the first sheet and the second sheet of the drywall;    positioning the first side of the drywall-joint cover in juxtaposed contact with an outside surface of the first sheet;    positioning the second side of the drywall-joint cover in juxtaposed contact with an outside surface of the second sheet;    driving a selected plurality of the fastener shanks into and through the fastener-edge area of the first sheet;    driving the selected plurality of the fastener shanks through the attachment flange; and    driving the selected plurality of the fastener shanks into the wall framework.
