Exhaust treatment device

Abstract

An exhaust treatment device is fixed to the exhaust end of an exhaust pipe of an automotive vehicle to treat exhaust emitted by the exhaust pipe. The device of the present invention can be used in addition to any other exhaust treatment devices associated with the automotive engine.

1 . An exhaust treatment device comprising: 
 a) a tailpipe of an automotive vehicle, said tailpipe including an exhaust end; and    b) a filter unit releasably mounted on said tailpipe adjacent to the exhaust end of said tailpipe and which includes 
 (1) a cylindrical housing having a first end which is a proximal end when said filter unit is mounted on said tailpipe, a second end which is a distal end when said filter unit is mounted on said tailpipe, a longitudinal axis which extends between the first end of the cylindrical housing and the second end of the cylindrical housing, a bore defined through the cylindrical housing in the direction of the longitudinal axis and which extends between the first end of the cylindrical housing and the second end of the cylindrical housing, an internal surface on the cylindrical housing adjacent to the bore, an outside surface on the cylindrical housing, a plurality of exhaust holes defined through the cylindrical housing and located adjacent to the second end of the cylindrical housing,  
 (2) a clamp unit on the first end of the cylindrical housing, the clamp unit being sized and adapted to securely clamp said tailpipe adjacent to the exhaust end of said tailpipe, the exhaust end of said tailpipe being located inside the bore of the cylindrical housing when said filter unit is mounted on said tailpipe, and  
 (3) filter media located in the bore of the cylindrical housing between the first end of the cylindrical housing and the second end of the cylindrical housing, the filter media being located to be in fluid communication with the exhaust end of said tailpipe and with the exhaust holes defined in the cylindrical housing when said filter unit is mounted on said tail pipe.
