Abstract

A structured document browser includes a constant user interface for displaying and viewing sections of a document that is organized according to a pre-defined structure. The structured document browser displays documents that have been marked with embedded codes that specify the structure of the document. The tags are mapped to correspond to a set of icons. When the icon is selected while browsing a document, the browser will display the section of the structure corresponding to the icon selected, while preserving the constant user interface.

1 . A method for displaying data, the method comprising: 
 displaying at least three selectors; wherein each of the at least three selectors is automatically configured to correspond to respective data; wherein the data comprises Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML); wherein at least one of the at least three selectors does not comprise a first page button, a last page button, a first section button, a last section button, a next page button, a previous page button, a next section button, or a previous section button; and wherein the at least three selectors are displayed in a toolbar; and    after receiving a selection of a selected one of the at least three selectors: 
 retrieving data corresponding to the selected one of the at least three selectors from a storage medium via a network, wherein the network comprises the Internet;  
 displaying the retrieved data; and  
 displaying the at least three selectors.  
   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the at least three selectors are not part of a user interface of an operating system.  
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the data comprises a section of a document.  
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising: 
 after receiving the selection of the selected one of the at least three selectors, without additional user input, displaying a second plurality of selectors, each of the second plurality of selectors corresponding to respective data.    
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the at least three selectors are never obscured by the displayed data.  
     
     
         6 . A method comprising: 
 displaying at least three selectors, wherein each of the at least three selectors corresponds to respective data, and wherein the at least three selectors are displayed in a toolbar; and    after receiving a selection of a selected one of the at least three selectors: 
 displaying data that corresponds to the selected one of the at least three selectors, wherein the data is displayed in a display window that does not overlap the toolbar; and  
 displaying the at least three selectors.  
   
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the at least three selectors are not part of a user interface of an operating system.  
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 6  further comprising retrieving the data corresponding to the selected one of the at least three selectors from a storage medium via a network.  
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the network comprises the Internet.  
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the at least three selectors are automatically displayed without prompting by a user.  
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein each of the at least three selectors is automatically configured to correspond to the respective data.  
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the at least three selectors comprise buttons.  
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the at least three selectors comprise text.  
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein at least one of the at least three selectors does not comprise a first page button, a last page button, a first section button, a last section button, a next page button, a previous page button, a next section button, or a previous section button.  
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the data comprises Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML).  
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the data comprises Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the data comprises a section of a document.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 6  further comprising: 
 after receiving the selection of the selected one of the at least three selectors, without additional user input, displaying a second plurality of selectors, each of the second plurality of selectors corresponding to respective data.    
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the at least three selectors are never obscured by the displayed data.  
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 6  further comprising displaying the data that corresponds to the selected one of the at least three selectors while continuing to display the at least three selectors.  
     
     
         21 . An apparatus comprising: 
 a processor; and    a memory storing program code executable by the processor, the program code operative to: 
 display at least three selectors, wherein each of the at least three selectors corresponds to respective data, and wherein the at least three selectors are displayed in a toolbar; and  
 after receiving a selection of a selected one of the at least three selectors: 
 display data that corresponds to the selected one of the at least three selectors, wherein the data is displayed in a display window that does not overlap the toolbar; and  
 display the at least three selectors.  
 
   
     
     
         22 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least three selectors are not part of a user interface of an operating system.  
     
     
         23 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the data corresponding to the selected one of the at least three selectors is stored in a storage medium coupled with the processor over a network.  
     
     
         24 . The apparatus of  claim 23 , wherein the network comprises the Internet.  
     
     
         25 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least three selectors are automatically displayed without prompting by a user.  
     
     
         26 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein each of the at least three selectors is automatically configured to correspond to the respective data.  
     
     
         27 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least three selectors comprise buttons.  
     
     
         28 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least three selectors comprise text.

The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein at least one of the at least three selectors does not comprise a first page button, a last page button, a first section button, a last section button, a next page button, a previous page button, a next section button, or a previous section button.

         37 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the program code is further operative to display the data that corresponds to the selected one of the at least three selectors while continuing to display the at least three selectors.  
     
     
         38 . A computer-readable storage medium comprising computer-readable program code stored therein, the computer-readable program code is operative to: 
 display at least three selectors, wherein each of the at least three selectors corresponds to respective data, and wherein the at least three selectors are displayed in a toolbar; and    after receiving a selection of a selected one of the at least three selectors: 
 display data that corresponds to the selected one of the at least three selectors, and wherein the data is displayed in a display window that does not overlap the toolbar; and  
 display the at least three selectors.  
   
     
     
         39 . The computer-readable storage medium of  claim 38 , wherein the at least three selectors are not part of a user interface of an operating system.
