Abstract
A system, method and apparatus for an electromagnetic waveform generator is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention, a computer software interface provides control signals to an array of electromagnetic pulse generation gates. Electromagnetic pulses generated by the array of electromagnetic pulse generation gates may be aggregated to form a desired waveform. One feature of the invention is that the electromagnetic waveforms generated are compatible with a number of different communications methods and technologies. receiving data for transmission; modulating the data; providing an electromagnetic pulse generating circuit; generating a plurality of electromagnetic pulses arranged to represent the modulated data; and transmitting the plurality of electromagnetic pulses.
2 . The method of transmitting data of claim 1 , wherein the step of generating a plurality of electromagnetic pulses comprises means for generating a plurality of electromagnetic pulses.
3 . The method of transmitting data of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of electromagnetic pulses may have a duration ranging from about 1 pico-second to about 1 milli-second.
4 . The method of transmitting data of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electromagnetic pulses represent data.
5 . The method of transmitting data of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electromagnetic pulses are employed in an ultra-wideband communication system.
6 . The method of transmitting data of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of electromagnetic pulses produced by the electromagnetic pulse generating circuit are aggregated to form a sinusoidal waveform.
7 . A system of transmitting data, comprising:
means for receiving data for transmission; means for modulating the data; means for providing an electromagnetic pulse generating circuit; means for generating a plurality of electromagnetic pulses arranged to represent the modulated data; and means for transmitting the plurality of electromagnetic pulses.
8 . The system of claim 7 , where the means for providing an electromagnetic pulse generating circuit comprise:
a control unit; at least two current sources; at least two switching elements connected to the current sources, each of the switching elements structured to receive a signal from the control unit; a switch connected to the at least two switching elements, the switch structured to receive a signal from the control unit; a load connected to the switch; and a first set of resistive elements connected to the current sources, and to the switching elements, the resistive elements also connected to a second voltage level.
9 . The system of claim 8 , further comprising:
a second set of resistive elements connected to the switching elements, and to the switch, the second set of resistive elements also connected to the second voltage level.
10 . The system of claim 8 , where the control unit is selected from a group consisting of: a finite state machine; and a microprocessor.
11 . The system of claim 8 , where the current sources are selected from a group consisting of: a Wilson current mirror, and a Widlar current mirror.
12 . The system of claim 8 , where the current sources provide substantially the same current as a second current source.
13 . The system of claim 8 , where the current sources provide a substantially different current than a second current source.
14 . The system of claim 8 , where the at least two switch elements comprise at least one transistor.
15 . The system of claim 8 , where the switch is selected from a group consisting of: at least one transistor and an inverter.
16 . The system of claim 8 , where the load is selected from a group consisting of: a resistive element, an energy storage element, and a capacitor.
17 . The system of claim 7 , where each of the plurality of electromagnetic pulses may vary in amplitude from about −5 volts to about 5 volts.
18 . The system of claim 7 , where each of the plurality of electromagnetic pulses may have a duration ranging from about 1 picosecond to about 1 milli-second.
19 . The system of claim 7 , where the plurality of electromagnetic pulses are employed in an ultra-wideband communication system.
20 . The system of claim 7 , where the means for generating the plurality of electromagnetic pulses arranged to represent the modulated data comprises:
