Polymer blend and fabricated article made from diverse ethylene interpolymers
Abstract
Polymer blends are disclosed that include from about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one first ethylene interpolymer having at least one first comonomer, and from about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one second ethylene interpolymer having at least one second comonomer. In the disclosed blends, the first comonomer is different from the second comonomer and the melt index (I 2 ) of the first ethylene interpolymer is less than or equal to the melt index (I 2 ) of the second ethylene interpolymer. The blend are also characterized as having a density of greater than or equal to 0.90 g/cc. Articles made from such blends are also disclosed.

39 . A polymer blend comprising:
(A) from about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one first ethylene interpolymer having at least one first comonomer, and (B) from about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one second ethylene interpolymer having at least one second comonomer; wherein the at least one first comonomer is different from the at least one second comonomer, wherein the melt index (I 2 ) of the first ethylene interpolymer is less than or equal to the melt index (I 2 ) of the second ethylene interpolymer; and wherein the polymer blend is characterized as having a density of greater than or equal to 0.90 g/cc.
40 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the first or second ethylene interpolymer has a melt index (I 2 ) in the range of from about 0.001 g/10 minutes to about 10 g/10 minutes.
41 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer is a homogeneously branched and the second ethylene interpolymer is heterogeneously branched.
42 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the second ethylene interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched ethylene copolymer having a density of from about 0.93 g/cc to about 0.95 g/cc and a melt index (I 2 ) of from about 0.1 to about 500 g/10 min.
43 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer has a density that is less than the density of the second ethylene interpolymer, wherein the second ethylene interpolymer has a density of 0.950 g/cc or less.
44 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer is a homogeneously branched interpolymer and the at least one first comonomer has fewer carbon atoms than the at least one second comonomer.
45 . The polymer blend of claim 44 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer is a substantially linear ethylene interpolymer.
46 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein at least one of the first ethylene interpolymer or the second ethylene interpolymer has a slope of strain hardening coefficient of greater than or equal to 1.3.
47 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the blend is characterized as having an intrinsic tear value of greater than or equal to 150 grams to about 225 grams.
48 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the blend is characterized as having a slope of strain hardening coefficient of from about 0.85 to about 1.
49 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the at least one first comonomer has at least 2 fewer carbons atoms than the at least one second comonomer.
50 . The polymer blend of claim 49 wherein the first and second ethylene interpolymers are ethylene copolymers.
51 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer is an ethylene/1-octene copolymer and the second ethylene interpolymer is an ethylene/1-pentene, ethylene/1-butene, or ethylene/1-propene copolymer.
52 . The polymer blend of claim 51 wherein the first ethylene interpolymer is a substantially linear ethylene/1-otcene copolymer and the second ethylene interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched ethylene/1-butene copolymer.
53 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the second ethylene interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched ethylene copolymer having a density of less than or equal to 0.95 g/cc and a molecular weight distribution of greater than 3.
54 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the second ethylene interpolymer has a molecular weight distribution of at least 3.3.
55 . The polymer blend of claim 39 wherein the second ethylene interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched ethylene copolymer having a density of less than or equal to 0.950 g/cc and an SCBDI of less than 50 percent.
56 . A polymer blend comprising:
(A) from about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one first ethylene interpolymer having at least one first comonomer, and (B) from about 95 percent (by weight of the total composition) to about 5 percent (by weight of the total composition) of at least one second ethylene interpolymer having at least one second comonomer; wherein the at least one first comonomer is different from the at least one second comonomer, wherein one interpolymer is a homogeneously branched ethylene interpolymer and the other interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched ethylene interpolymer or a homogeneously branched ethylene interpolymer; and wherein the polymer blend is characterized as having a density of greater than or equal to 0.90 g/cc.
57 . An article of manufacture comprising the polymer blend of claim 39 .
