Abstract

A process for producing polysiloxane prepolymers of improved homogeneity for use in the production of relatively high refractive index polymeric compositions is described herein. Polymeric compositions so produced are useful in the production of ophthalmic devices such as for example intraocular lenses and corneal inlays.

         18 . A polysiloxane prepolymer, produced by polymerizing divinyl-terminated poly(dialkylsiloxane) or 1,3-divinylteraalkyldisiloxane with dialkylsiloxane and alkylarylsiloxane cyclics, the polysiloxane prepolymer comprising:  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       wherein the R 1  groups may be the same or different selected from the group consisting of C 1-10  alkyl substituents; R 2  is a C 6-30  aromatic substituent; and x and y may be the same or different natural number with y/x+y at least equal to 0.1; and wherein the polysiloxane prepolymer is substantially free of separate phase comprising cyclics of alkylarylsiloxanes.  
     
     
         19 . A polymeric composition produced through the copolymerization of one or more polysiloxane prepolymers of  claim 18  with one or more strengthening agents, one or more crosslinking agents and one or more catalysts; wherein the polymeric composition is free of separate phase comprising cyclics of alkylarylsiloxanes.  
     
     
         20 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said strengthening agent is selected from a group consisting of silica filler and a siloxane-based resin with at least one vinyl groups.  
     
     
         21 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said strengthening agent is a silica filler.  
     
     
         22 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said strengthening agent is a siloxane-based resin with at least one vinyl groups.  
     
     
         23 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said crosslinking agent is poly(dimethyl-co-methylhydrosiloxane).  
     
     
         24 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said catalyst is selected from the group consisting of Pt-silicone complex, potassium silanoate and aminosilanoate.  
     
     
         25 . The polymeric composition of  claim 19  wherein said catalyst is Pt-silicone complex.
