Abstract

In the data structure for backing up management files, management files that manage reproduction of data from the recording medium are stored in a recording area as is a back-up directory. The back-up directory includes a copy of each management file as a respective back-up file.

1 . A recording medium having a data structure for backing up management files, comprising: 
 a recording area storing at least one general management file, a up directory, the stream directory including at least one stream file of data, the playlist directory including a least one playlist file, and the clip information directory including at least one clip information file, the general management file being for managing reproduction of at least one playlist file, and the playlist and clip information files being for managing reproduction of the data in the stream directory, the back-up directory including a copy of each general management file, the playlist directory and the clip information directory.    
   
   
       2 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the back-up directory does not include a copy of the stream directory.  
   
   
       3 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the recording area includes an index file and a movie object file as general management files, the index file provides a menu for selecting reproduction of data in the stream directory, and the movie object file links at least one menu selection with a playlist file in the playlist directory.  
   
   
       4 . The recording medium of  claim 3 , wherein each playlist file provides timing information indicating a time interval for reproducing data in the stream directory, and the clip information file provides a map for mapping the timing information into stream address information of the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       5 . The recording medium of  claim 4 , wherein the timing information is a start time given as a presentation time stamp and a stop time given as a presentation time stamp, and the map maps presentation time stamps to source packet numbers of source packets forming the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       6 . The recording medium of  claim 4 , wherein the data in the stream directory includes at least video data.  
   
   
       7 . The recording medium of  claim 4 , wherein 
 the recording medium is an optical disc;    the at least one general management file, playlist directory, and clip information directory are stored at an inner radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc; and    the back-up directory is stored at an outer radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc.    
   
   
       8 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein each playlist file provides timing information indicating a time interval for reproducing data in the stream directory, and the clip information file provides a map for mapping the timing information into stream address information of the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       9 . The recording medium of  claim 8 , wherein the timing information is a start time given as a presentation time stamp and a stop time given as a presentation time stamp, and the map maps presentation time stamps to source packet numbers of source packets forming the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       10 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the data in the stream directory includes at least video data.  
   
   
       11 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein 
 the recording medium is an optical disc;    the at least one general management file, playlist directory, and clip information directory are stored at an inner radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc; and    the back-up directory is stored at an outer radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc.    
   
   
       12 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein each playlist file has a same file name extension, and each clip information file has a same file name extension.  
   
   
       13 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein a file structure of the back-up directory is same as a file structure of the management files copied therein.  
   
   
       14 . A recording medium having a data structure for backing up management files, comprising: 
 a recording area storing a database and a back-up directory, the database including at least one directory having at least one database file, each database file for managing, directly or indirectly, reproduction of data recorded on the recording medium, and the back-up directory including a copy of the database.    
   
   
       15 . The recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the database and the copy of the database in the back-up directory have a same file structure.  
   
   
       16 . The recording medium of  claim 14 , wherein 
 the recording medium is an optical disc;    the database is stored at an inner radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc; and    the back-up directory is stored at an outer radial portion of the recording area on the optical disc.    
   
   
       17 . The recording medium of  claim 14 , wherein the database includes an index file and a movie object file as database files, the index file provides a menu for selecting reproduction of data in a stream directory, and the movie object file links at least one menu selection with a playlist file.  
   
   
       18 . The recording medium of  claim 17 , wherein the database includes a playlist directory and a clip information directory as data base directories, the playlist directory includes at least one playlist file providing timing information indicating a time interval for reproducing data in the stream directory, and the clip information directory includes at least one clip information file providing a map for mapping the timing information into stream address information of the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       19 . The recording medium of  claim 18 , wherein the timing information is a start time given as a presentation time stamp and a stop time given as a presentation time stamp, and the map maps presentation time stamps to source packet numbers of source packets forming the data in the stream directory.  
   
   
       20 . The recording medium of  claim 18 , wherein the data in the stream directory includes at least video data.  
   
   
       21 . The recording medium of  claim 14 , wherein the recording area includes a stream directory having at least one stream file of data, and the stream directory is not part of the database.  
   
   
       22 . A recording medium having a data structure for backing up management files, comprising: 
 a recording area storing management files that manage reproduction of data from the recording medium, and storing a back-up directory, the back-up directory including a copy of each management file as a respective back-up file.    
   
   
       23 . A method of reproducing a data structure for backing up management files from a recording medium, comprising: 
 first reproducing at least one general management file, a playlist directory, and a clip information directory, the playlist directory including a least one playlist file, and the clip information directory including at least one clip information file, the general management file being for managing reproduction of at least one playlist file, and the playlist file and clip information file being for managing reproduction of data in a stream directory recorded on the recording medium; and    second reproducing at least one back-up file from a back-up directory recorded on the recording medium when a defect exists in a file reproduced during the first reproducing step, the back-up directory including a copy of each general management file, the playlist directory and the clip information directory.    
   
   
       24 . A method of recording a data structure for backing up management files on a recording medium, comprising: 
 recording at least one general management file, a playlist directory, a clip information directory, a stream directory and a back-up directory on a recording medium, the stream directory including at least one stream file of data, the playlist directory including a least one playlist file, and the clip information directory including at least one clip information file, the general management file being for managing reproduction of at least one playlist file, and the playlist file and clip information file being for managing reproduction of the data in the stream directory, the back-up directory including a copy of each general management file, the playlist directory and the clip information directory.    
   
   
       25 . An apparatus for reproducing a data structure for backing up management files from a recording medium, comprising: 
 a driver for driving an optical reproducing device to reproduce data recorded on the recording medium;    a controller for controlling the driver to first reproduce at least one general management file, a playlist directory, and a clip information directory, the playlist directory including a least one playlist file, and the clip information directory including at least one clip information file, the general management file being for managing reproduction of at least one playlist file, and the playlist file and clip information file being for managing reproduction of data in a stream directory recorded on the recording medium; and controlling the driver to second reproduce at least one back-up file from a back-up directory recorded on the recording medium when a defect exists in a file reproduced during the first reproducing step, the back-up directory including a copy of each general management file, the playlist directory and the clip information directory.    
   
   
       26 . An apparatus for recording a data structure for backing up management files on a recording medium, comprising: 
 a driver for driving an optical recording device to record data on the recording medium;    a controller for controlling the driver to record at least one general management file, a playlist directory, a clip information directory, a stream directory and a back-up directory on the recording medium, the stream directory including at least one stream file of data, the playlist directory including a least one playlist file, and the clip information directory including at least one clip information file, the general management file being for managing reproduction of at least one playlist file, and the playlist file and clip information file being for managing reproduction of the data in the stream directory, the back-up directory including a copy of each general management file, the playlist directory and the clip information directory.
