Flip-top closure

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a flip-top dispensing closure. The flip-top dispensing closure has a pour spout that is open in a region where a base portion is hingedly connected to a cap portion, enabling a larger pour opening and pour spout.

1 . A flip top closure assembly for affixing atop a neck of a container comprising: 
 a) a base portion; and    b) a cap portion that is hingedly connected to the base portion;    wherein the base portion has a peripheral skirt for engagement with the open neck of a container, a floor extending inwardly from atop the skirt and having an opening therein that defines a pour opening, and a pour spout ascending from an inward portion of the floor, wherein the spout extends only partially around the pour opening thereby leaving a portion of the pour opening where there is no spout and wherein the portion of the pour opening where there is no spout being in the region where the cap portion that is hingedly connected to the base portion, and    wherein the cap portion has an open and close position, a peripheral skirt, a ceiling extending inwardly from atop of the skirt, and a cylindrical rim extending downward from the floor, wherein the rim forms a seal with the base portion floor when the cap portion is in a close position.    
     
     
         2 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the pour spout has an anti-drip lip.  
     
     
         3 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the cap portion has a second cylindrical rim extending downward from the ceiling.  
     
     
         4 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the pour spout extends less than 360° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         5 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the pour spout extends less than 300° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         6 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the pour spout extends less than 270° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         7 . A closure assembly according to  claim 1 , wherein the pour spout extends less than 240° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         8 . A container comprising a container body and having a finish at an upper end, wherein the finish is engaged with a flip top closure assembly, wherein the flip top closure assembly is comprised of: 
 a) a base portion; and    b) a cap portion that is hingedly connected to the base portion;    wherein the base portion has a peripheral skirt for engagement with the open neck of a container, a floor extending inwardly from atop the skirt and having an opening therein that defines a pour opening, and a pour spout ascending from an inward portion of the floor, wherein the spout extends only partially around the pour opening thereby leaving a portion of the pour opening where there is no spout and wherein the portion of the pour opening where there is no spout being in the region where the cap portion that is hingedly connected to the base portion, and    wherein the cap portion has an open and close position, a peripheral skirt, a ceiling extending inwardly from atop of the skirt, and a cylindrical rim extending downward from the floor, wherein the rim forms a seal with the base portion floor when the cap portion is in a close position.    
     
     
         9 . A container according to  claim 8 , wherein the closure assembly pour spout extends less than 360° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         10 . A container according to  claim 8 , wherein the closure assembly pour spout extends less than 300° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         11 . A container according to  claim 8 , wherein the closure assembly pour spout extends less than 270° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.  
     
     
         12 . A container according to  claim 8 , wherein the closure assembly pour spout extends less than 240° around the pour opening in the base portion floor.
