Abstract
A synthetic ester-containing lubricant with good soot-handling and, with friction modifier, viscosity modifier and antioxidant present, improved engine performance and cleanliness.

76 . A method of improving the ability of a lubricant composition to retain particulate products of fuel combustion in suspension, the method comprising adding to the lubricant from 5 to 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of an ester effective to improve the ability of the composition to retain said particulate products in suspension, the ester being an ester of a carboxylic acid, having at most 30 carbon atoms, and an alcohol, the ester being substantially free from unreacted alcohol moieties and having a molecular weight within the range of from 400 to 5000.
77 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the composition contains from 10 to 40% of the ester.
78 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the composition contains from 15 to 30% of the ester.
79 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the molecular weight of the ester is at least 450.
80 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the molecular weight of the ester is within the range of from 500 to 750.
81 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the ester is an ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a monocarboxylic acid.
82 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the ester is an ester of trimethylol propane and a mixture of C8 to C10 alkanoic acids.
83 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the composition is a crankcase lubricant.
84 . The method as claimed in claim 76 , wherein the composition is a compression-ignited engine crankcase lubricant.
85 . The method as claimed in claim 76 wherein the composition comprises an API Group III base stock.
