Modular deck

Abstract

A modular decking system and decking components are used to assemble a deck. One or more prefabricated decking modules are supported by an outer rectangular frame to provide a finished deck having the appearance of a custom stick built deck. Each deck module comprises a base having deck flooring attached to provide an overhang of the deck flooring and an exposed base edge on opposite sides of the base. The deck module base is sized so that each end of the deck flooring extends beyond each end of the deck module base by an amount sufficient to provide support. The ends of the deck flooring are attachable to the opposite ends of the outer rectangular frame, which provide the support for each of the deck modules.

1 . A deck module, comprising: 
 a base; and    deck flooring attached to the base to provide an overhang and an exposed base edge, wherein each end of the deck flooring extends beyond each end of the base.    
   
   
       2 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the base is rectangular comprising two base sides attached to two base ends.  
   
   
       3 . The deck module of  claim 2 , wherein the base further comprises one or more intermediate supports.  
   
   
       4 . The deck module of  claim 3 , wherein the one or more intermediate supports is substantially parallel to the base ends and is attached to an inside face of each of the two base ends.  
   
   
       5 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the deck flooring is deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       6 . The deck module of  claim 5 , wherein the deck flooring boards are made of composite material.  
   
   
       7 . The deck module of  claim 5 , wherein the deck flooring comprises between 2 and 6 deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       8 . The module of  claim 5 , wherein the deck flooring comprises 3 deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       9 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang is at least about 0.5 inches.  
   
   
       10 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang is between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches.  
   
   
       11 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the exposed base edge is at least about 0.25 inches.  
   
   
       12 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the exposed base edge is between about 0.5 inches and about 2 inches.  
   
   
       13 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the exposed base edge is about 1.5 inches.  
   
   
       14 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang is wider than the exposed base edge.  
   
   
       15 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang is at least 0.25 inches wider than the exposed base edge.  
   
   
       16 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang is between about 0.25 inches and about 1 inch wider than the exposed base edge.  
   
   
       17 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein each end of the deck flooring extends between about 1 inch and about 16 inches beyond each end of the base.  
   
   
       18 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein each end of the deck flooring extends between about 4 inches and about 10 inches beyond each end of the base.  
   
   
       19 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the deck module comprises wood.  
   
   
       20 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein material for the deck flooring is wood, composite or combinations thereof.  
   
   
       21 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the means for attaching the deck flooring to the base is by glue, screws, nails, clamps, bolts, staples or combinations thereof.  
   
   
       22 . The deck module of  claim 1 , wherein the overhang of a first deck module covers the exposed base edge of an adjacent second deck module.  
   
   
       23 . An end deck module, comprising: 
 a base; and    deck flooring attached to the base to provide an overhang on each side of the base, wherein the overhangs are each between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches.    
   
   
       24 . The end deck module of  claim 16 , wherein material for the deck flooring is wood, composite or combinations thereof.  
   
   
       25 . The end deck module of  claim 23 , wherein the deck flooring is deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       26 . The end deck module of  claim 25 , wherein the deck flooring boards are made of composite material.  
   
   
       27 . The end deck module of  claim 25 , wherein the deck flooring comprises between 2 and 6 deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       28 . A modular deck system, comprising: 
 an outer rectangular frame;    one or more deck modules, wherein each deck module comprises: 
 a base; and  
 deck flooring attached to the base to provide an overhang and an exposed base edge, wherein each end of the deck flooring extends beyond each end of the base for attachment to opposite ends of the outer rectangular frame; and  
   an end deck module, wherein each end of the end deck module is attachable to opposite ends of the outer rectangular frame, wherein an edge of the end deck module is attachable to a side of the outer rectangular frame, and wherein an opposite edge of the end deck module is attachable to the exposed base edge of one of the one or more deck modules.    
   
   
       29 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein one deck module is positionable such that the overhang covers an opposite side of the outer rectangular frame and wherein the end deck module is positionable to cover the exposed base edge of the one deck module.  
   
   
       30 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein one deck module is positionable such that the overhang of the one deck module covers an opposite side of the outer rectangular frame and wherein a second deck module is positionable such that the overhang of the second deck module covers the exposed base edge of the one deck module.  
   
   
       31 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the deck flooring is attachable to a top edge of the opposite ends of the outer rectangular frame.  
   
   
       32 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the base is rectangular comprising two base sides attached to two base ends.  
   
   
       33 . The system of  claim 32 , wherein the base further comprises one or more intermediate supports.  
   
   
       34 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the deck flooring is deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       35 . The system of  claim 34 , wherein the deck flooring boards are made of composite material.  
   
   
       36 . The system of  claim 34 , wherein the deck flooring comprises between 2 and 6 deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       37 . The system of  claim 34 , wherein the deck flooring comprises 3 deck flooring boards.  
   
   
       38 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the overhang is wider than the exposed base edge.  
   
   
       39 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the deck module comprises wood.  
   
   
       40 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein material for the deck flooring is wood, composite or combinations thereof.  
   
   
       41 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the means for attaching the deck flooring to the base is by glue, screws, nails, clamps, staples or combinations thereof.  
   
   
       42 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein there are at least two deck modules, each of the deck modules are positionable such that the overhang of a first deck module covers the exposed base edge of an adjacent deck module.  
   
   
       43 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the end deck module comprises: 
 a base; and    deck flooring attached to the base to provide an overhang on each side of the base, wherein the overhangs are each between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches.    
   
   
       44 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the end deck module comprises: 
 a deck flooring board.    
   
   
       45 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the opposite ends of the outer rectangular frame comprise: 
 a first board;    a second board attached to an inner side of the first board.    
   
   
       46 . The system of  claim 45 , wherein the first board is wider than the second board.  
   
   
       47 . The system of  claim 45 , further comprising: 
 a third board attached to an outer side of the first board, wherein the third board is decorative facing.    
   
   
       48 . The system of  claim 47 , wherein the third board is a deck flooring board.  
   
   
       49 . The system of  claim 28 , wherein the outer rectangular frame further comprises one or more intermediate supports, wherein each intermediate support is attached to an inside face of each of the two sides of the outer rectangular frame.
