Abstract

The invention relates to novel wound coverings with which interfering factors of the wound healing process can be removed from the wound fluid of chronic wounds in a controlled manner and the normal healing process is promoted.

A method of healing a wound comprising applying to a wound a composition comprising a carrier covalently bonded to at least one substance which interacts with interfering factors present in a wound exudate, said wound healing process being impeded by said factors, the interfering factors being selected from the group consisting of suspended cells, cell fragments and dissolved constituents, said substance bonding, complexing or chelating said factors or chemically reacting with said factors.  
     
     
         2 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the substance is selected from the group consisting of an antibody, a chelator, an enzyme inhibitor, an enzyme, a peptide and a protein.  
     
     
         3 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the carrier is a polymeric carrier material of natural or synthetic origin.  
     
     
         4 . A method according to  claim 3 , wherein the polymeric carrier is selected from the group consisting of cellulose, cellulose derivatives, alginates, hyaluronic acid, chitin, chitosans, polysaccharides, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins, polycrylates, polyvinyl alcohols, polyurethanes, silicones, mixtures thereof, and copolymers thereof.  
     
     
         5 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the composition is in the form of a wound covering selected from the group consisting of a dressing, a dressing gauze, a bandage, a compress, cotton-wool, a patch, a foil, a film, a hydrocolloid dressing and a gel.

         9 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the interfering factors are reactive oxygen radicals and the substance which interacts with the interfering factors is an agent which traps free radicals.  
     
     
         10 . A method according to  claim 9 , wherein the agent which traps free radicals is selected from the group consisting of a superoxide dismutase, a catalase, a glutathione peroxidase, a myeloperoxidase, and an enzyme mimic thereof.  
     
     
         11 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the interfering factor is a protease and the substance which interacts with the interfering factor is a protease inhibitor.  
     
     
         12 . A method according to  claim 11 , wherein the protease inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of antipain, leupeptin, cystain, pepstatin, diisopropyl fluorophosphate, 4-(aminoethyl)-phenylsulphonyl fluoride, phenylmethanesulphonyl fluoride, a matrix mettalloproteinase proteinogenic protease inhibitor, an aprotinin, an alpha-2-antiplasmin, an alpha-2-macroglobulin, an alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, a soya bean trypsin inhibitor and an alpha-1-protease inhibitor.  
     
     
         13 . A wound covering, comprising a carrier covalently bound to at least one substance which interacts with interfering factors present in a wound exudate, which factors impede wound healing and are selected from the group consisting of suspended cells, fragments and dissolved constituents, said substance bonding, complexing or chelating said factors or chemically reacting with said factors.  
     
     
         14 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , wherein the substance is selected from the group consisting of an antibody, a chelator, an enzyme inhibitor, an enzyme, an enzyme mimic and a protein.  
     
     
         15 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , wherein the carrier is a polymeric carrier material or natural or synthetic origin.  
     
     
         16 . A wound covering according to  claim 15 , wherein the polymeric carrier is selected from the group consisting of cellulose, cellulose derivatives, alginates, hyaluronic acid, chitin, chitosans, polysaccharides, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins, polyacrylates, polyvinyl alcohols, polyurethanes, silicones, mixtures thereof, and copolymers thereof.  
     
     
         17 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , wherein the wound covering is selected from the group consisting of a dressing, a a dressing, a dressing gauze, a bandage, a compress, cotton-wool, a patch, a foil, a film, a hydrocolloid dressing and a gel.  
     
     
         18 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , wherein the interfering factors are ions and the substance which interacts with the interfering factors is a chelator.

A wound covering according to  claim 23 , wherein the protease inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of antipain, leupeptin, cystain, pepstatin, diisopropyl fluorophosphate, 4-(aminoethyl)-phenylsulphonyl fluoride, phenylmethane-sulphonyl fluoride, a matrix metalloproteinase proteinogenic protease inhibitor, an aprotinin, an alpha-2-antiplasmin, an alpha-2-macroglobulin, an alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, a soya bean trypsin inhibitor and an alpha-1-protease inhibitor.  
     
     
         25 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , which additionally comprises substances which promote wound healing.  
     
     
         26 . A wound covering according to  claim 25 , wherein the substances which promote wound healing are growth factors.  
     
     
         27 . A wound covering according to  claim 13 , further comprising a moisture absorbing element.  
     
     
         28 . A process for the production of a wound covering according to  claim 13 , comprising covalently bonding the substance to the carrier by chemical reaction.  
     
     
         29 . A method  claim 1  wherein said factors are selected from the group consisting of antigens, free radicals, ions, proteins, peptides, lipids and free fatty acids.  
     
     
         30 . A wound covering according to  claim 13  wherein factors are selected from the group consisting of antigens, free radicals, ions, proteins, peptides, lipids and free fatty acids.
