Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of peptides using an excess of an activated carboxylic component to acylate an amino component, wherein after the acylation an amine comprising a free anion or a latent anion is used as a scavenger of residual activated carboxylic functions. This process is useful for the preparation of oligo- and polypeptides and, more generally, in the preparation of compounds containing one or more amide bonds.

         15 . The process for the preparation of peptide comprising the steps of scavenging residual activated carboxylic functions; and extracting a scavenged compound.  
     
     
         16 . The process of  claim 15  wherein the scavenger is a hydrophilic scavenger.  
     
     
         17 . The process of  claim 15  wherein the scavenger is selected from a group of an amine comprising free anion or a latent anion and a thiol comprising a free anion or latent anion.  
     
     
         18 . The process of  claim 17  wherein the scavenger is a latent anion and bears a temporary protecting group which can be selectively removed in the presence of any permanent protecting group.  
     
     
         19 . The process of  claim 18  wherein the permanent protecting group is attached to growing peptide.  
     
     
         20 . The process of  claim 15  further comprising the step of extracting a carboxylic component which is not activated.
