Abstract

The present invention provides a composition comprising prebiotic and probiotic components and is used to reduce elevated levels of nitrogenous waste products and to promote a healthy bowel microenvironment.

1 . A composition comprising at least one probiotic component and at least one prebiotic component.  
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1  wherein the probiotic component comprises a  Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Streptococcus Bifidobacteria, Saccharomyces  or  Leuconostoc.    
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1  wherein the prebiotic component comprises an oligosaccharide, a pyrodextrin or a fiber source.  
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1  further comprising at least one urease-secreting microorganism.  
     
     
         5 . A method of removing nitrogenous waste products comprising administering an effective amount of a composition of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         6 . A method of treating renal failure comprising administering an effective amount of a composition of  claim 4.
