Claims

Abstract

A time domain communications system wherein a broadband of time-spaced signals, essentially monocycle-like signals, are derived from applying stepped-in-amplitude signals to a broadband antenna, in this case, a reverse bicone antenna. When received, the thus transmitted signals are multiplied by a D.C. replica of each transmitted signal, and thereafter, they are, successively, short time and long time integrated to achieve detection.

1 . In a wideband radio system, a receiver that detects wideband burst signals, said wideband burst signals having a time spacing, comprising: 
 an antenna that converts said wideband burst signals into received signals;    a template signal generator that generates template signals in accordance with said time spacing;    a coincidence detector that outputs product signals, each of said product signals being the product of one of said received signals and one of said template signals synchronously arriving at said coincidence detector; and    an integrator responsive to said product signals, said integrator outputting an integrated signal.    
   
   
       2 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , wherein said time spacing is a varied time spacing.  
   
   
       3 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , wherein said time spacing is in accordance with one of an analog pattern and a digital pattern.  
   
   
       4 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , wherein said wideband burst signals comprise shaped signals.  
   
   
       5 . The receiver according to  claim 4 , wherein shaping of said shaped signals is a form of encoding.  
   
   
       6 . The receiver according to  claim 5 , wherein said receiver is adapted to decode said form of encoding based upon said shaping of said shaped signals.  
   
   
       7 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , further comprising a filter having an input, said input being coupled to said antenna and having an output, said output coupled to said coincidence detector, and wherein said filter has a filter response, said filter response being the reciprocal of said shaped signals.  
   
   
       8 . The receiver according to  claim 7 , wherein said filter is a matched filter.  
   
   
       9 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , wherein said integrator comprises: 
 a first integrator that integrates said product signals to produce first integrated signals; and    a second integrator that integrates said first integrated signals to produce said integrated signal.    
   
   
       10 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , further comprising a means for digitizing said integrated signal.  
   
   
       11 . The receiver according to  claim 1 , wherein said antenna is a directional antenna.  
   
   
       12 . A method of detecting wideband burst signals transmitted through free space, said wideband burst signals having a time spacing, comprising the steps of: 
 converting each of said wideband burst signals into a received signal;    generating a template signal, said template signal being substantially similar to said received signal;    synchronously multiplying said received signal by said template signal to generate a product signal; and    integrating said product signal.    
   
   
       13 . The method according to  claim 12 , wherein said time spacing is a varied time spacing.  
   
   
       14 . The method according to  claim 12 , wherein said time spacing is in accordance with one of an analog pattern and a digital pattern.  
   
   
       15 . The method according to  claim 12 , wherein said wideband burst signals comprise shaped signals.  
   
   
       16 . The method according to  claim 15 , wherein shaping of said shaped signals is a form of encoding.  
   
   
       17 . The method according to  claim 16 , further comprising the step of decoding information based upon said shaping.  
   
   
       18 . The method according to  claim 12 , wherein said step of converting includes filtering each of said wideband burst signals  
   
   
       19 . The method according to  claim 18 , wherein said filtering is performed by a matched filter.  
   
   
       20 . The method according to  claim 12 , wherein said step of integrating generates a first integrated signal, and further comprising the step of generating a second integrated signal by integrating a plurality of first integrated signals.  
   
   
       21 . A wideband radio receiver that detects wideband burst signals transmitted through free space, said wideband burst signals having a time spacing, said receiver comprising: 
 a means for converting a wideband burst signal into a received signal;    a means for generating a template signal, said template signal being substantially similar to said received signal;    a means for generating a product signal by synchronously multiplying said local signal by said received signal; and    a means for integrating said product signal.
