Abstract

This invention applies a flaccid, porous, horticulture shade material as a sunscreen canopy for an RV to reduce the heat and ultra violet rays for protection of roof mounted and internal accessories from damage as well as lower internal cabin temperatures. Wind shear is greatly reduced by using porous material. Recreational vehicles are either stored or in use. Either way, the temperature internal to the vehicle can reach temperatures between 100 and 140 degrees during hot days. The challenge presented is to mechanically attach the sunscreen canopy with fasteners, tent poles and mounting extrusions to a vehicle to hold the flaccid canopy at a horizontal position above a large recreational vehicle and be simple to setup and takedown for transport. This invention successfully demonstrates how to meet the protection objectives as well as enhances the air conditioning of an RV to improve occupant comfort.

1 . A Recreational Vehicle (RV) Portable Sunscreen Canopy that is manufactured from a porous, flaccid, heat reducing, lightweight material such as shade cloth used in commercial horticulture applications. The embodiment of the said canopy solves the age-old problem of heat reduction internal to a vehicle, particularly a large RV or SUV without causing a wind shear problem from gale force winds; specifically the invention is: 
 a. A pre-manufactured flaccid, porous shade cloth canopy attached to the ends of tent poles which insert into extrusions pre-mounted at the upper sides of a recreational vehicle at locations matching, or near, a grommet location in the shade cloth.    b. The attachment of the shade cloth, which is slightly larger than the roof of the target vehicle, with strings, rope, bungee cords, ball bungee cords, ties, or the like, to the tent poles inserted into extrusions mounted to the vehicle in order to protect roof mounted accessories from ultra violet rays and sun light damage. The shade cloth is chosen for the degree of protection desired such as a 60% shade, 70% shade, 80% shade, or 90% shade.    c. The employment of a less expensive black shade cloth, or a more expensive aluminum based shade cloth matching the percent shades available with the respective choice, for the desired protective characteristics.    d. The elimination of a major wind shear problem associated with structures large enough to cover a recreational vehicle of great length.    e. Designed to elimination the lightening rod effect by not using frames and stays that could attract lightening that is a major cause of damage to a recreational vehicle.    f. The inclusion of grommet, velcro ties, or button fasteners embedded in the taped and sewn or glued ends and sides of the rectangular flaccid shade cloth for fastening or tying the said shade cloth with ties to the tent poles which are inserted in said extrusions attached to vehicle as pre-determined by the customer.    g. A minimum weight canopy with the bundled cover, tent poles and fastening straps or bungee cords being such that the bundle is easy to manage by one person and which permits the apparatus to be stored in trunks, storage compartments, or under a couch or bed in the recreational vehicle.
