Precious stone setting

Abstract

A jewelry piece includes a precious stone having a visible upper surface and a body extending below the upper surface, the body having facets that meet to form corners, each facet having a groove at each corner that extends from the corner along only a portion of the facet so that the grooves of the facets that form each corner meet at the corner.

1 . A jewelry piece comprising: 
 a precious stone having a visible upper surface and a body extending below the upper surface, the body having facets that meet to form corners, each facet having a groove at each corner that extends from the corner along only a portion of the facet so that the grooves of the facets that form each corner meet at the corner.    
   
   
       2 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 1 , wherein the stone is a diamond.  
   
   
       3 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 2 , wherein the grooves in the diamond are effective for enabling the diamond to be invisibly mounted.  
   
   
       4 . A jewelry piece, comprising: 
 a plurality of precious stones, each of the stones having a visible upper surface and a body extending below the upper surface, the body having facets that meet to form corners, each facet having a groove at at least one of its corners, the groove extends from the corner along only a portion of the facet so that the grooves of the facets that form each corner meet at the corner; and    a setting in which the stones are mounted, the setting including prong members having an upper end and a lower end, a notch being provided along an outer periphery of each prong member in a region of the upper end so as to form an upper edge, the groove in at least one corner of each stone being engaged by the upper edge of one of the prong members.    
   
   
       5 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 4 , wherein the prong members are arranged to form a pattern.  
   
   
       6 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 5 , wherein the stones are princess-cut diamonds.  
   
   
       7 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 5 , wherein the stones are trillion-cut diamonds.  
   
   
       8 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 5 , wherein the stones are marquis-cut diamonds.  
   
   
       9 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 4 , wherein the stones include at least one of a princess-cut stone, a trillion-cut stone and a marquis-cut stone  
   
   
       10 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 4 , wherein the prong members are cylindrical.  
   
   
       11 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 4 , wherein the setting includes a body having a base and two parallel sidewalls extending from the base so as to form a channel, the prong members being arranged in the channel so as to form a desired pattern and engage with the grooves in the stones.  
   
   
       12 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 11 , wherein some of the prong members are arranged on the base so as to be free standing and others of the prong members are arranged along the sidewalls.  
   
   
       13 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 11 , wherein the prong members are arranged along the sidewalls.  
   
   
       14 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 11 , wherein each of the sidewalls has a longitudinally extending groove in an interior of the channel, the prong members being arranged on the base in a free-standing fashion, the stones engaging in the notches of the prong members and in the grooves in the sidewalls.  
   
   
       15 . A method of mounting precious stones having facets that form corners, comprising the steps of: 
 forming grooves in each corner of each of the stones so that each groove extends from the corner along only a portion of the facet and meets a groove in an adjacent facet at the corner;    providing a setting including prong members having an upper end and a lower end, and a notch provided along an entire outer periphery of the prong member in a region of the upper end so as to form an upper edge; and    inserting the precious stones in the setting so that the upper edges of the prong members engage the grooves in the corners of the stones.    
   
   
       16 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 15 , wherein the precious stones are diamonds.  
   
   
       17 . A jewelry piece as defined in  claim 15 , wherein the precious stones are mounted in a manner which obtains invisibly mounted precious stones.
