Abstract

The present invention refers to a plant produced by a process of selecting germ line-transformed leguminous plants. The process includes introducing exogenous genes into apical meristematic cells of the embryonic axis of leguminous plants by bombarding the plant cells with a DNA construct which includes a sequence which encodes a protein capable of conferring tolerance to a herbicide selected from the group consisting of an imidazolinone and a glyphosate, inducing multiple shoot formation from the transformed cells by culturing the embryonic axis in a medium containing a cytokinin, and selecting the meristematic cell-derived shoots obtained by culturing the embryonic axis on a medium containing imidazolinone or glyphosate.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 6 : (cancelled)

7 : A plant produced by a process of selecting germ line-transformed leguminous plants, said process comprising the steps of:
 a. introducing exogenous genes into apical meristematic cells of the embryonic axis of leguminous plants by bombarding said plant cells with a DNA construct which includes a sequence which encodes a protein capable of conferring tolerance to a herbicide selected from the group consisting of an imidazolinone and a glyphosate; b. inducing multiple shoot formation from the transformed cells produced in step (a) by culturing said embryonic axis in a medium containing a cytokinin; and c. selecting the meristematic cell-derived shoots obtained in step (b) by culturing said embryonic axis on a medium containing a herbicide selected from the group consisting of an imidazolinone and a glyphosate at a concentration ranging from 100 to 1000 nm.

8 : The plant of claim 7 , wherein the herbicide is an imidazolinone.

9 : The plant of claim 7 , wherein said plant is selected from the group consisting of soybean, bean, cowpea, and peanut.

10 : The plant of claim 9 , wherein said plant is soybean.

11 : The plant of claim 8 , wherein said plant is selected from the group consisting of soybean, bean, cowpea, and peanut.

12 : The plant of claim 11 , wherein said plant is soybean.

13 : A plant selected from the group consisting of soybean, bean, cowpea and peanut, wherein said plant has an exogenous gene causing said plant to be imidazolinone resistant.

14 : A seed selected from the group consisting of soybean, bean, cowpea and peanut, wherein said plant has an exogenous gene causing said plant to be imidazolinone resistant.
