Abstract
A hydraulic drive system for providing a smoothed or near sinusoidal output flow characteristic for reciprocating piston pumps is disclosed. A solution to hydraulic hammer caused by rapid flow reversal in the hydraulic control valves used within the system is presented that is based about a sloped hydraulic spool piece used in hydraulic control valves.

1 . A hydraulic spool piece for use in a hydraulic control valve for throttling fluid flow thereby reducing hydraulic hammer comprising a sloped drop having an angle varying between 1.5 degrees and 25 degrees.
2 . A hydraulic spool piece for use in hydraulic control valves for reducing hydraulic hammer and for directing fluid having a longitudinal axis, a longitudinal surface and having cuts perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, said cuts extending from said longitudinal surface into said hydraulic spool piece wherein said perpendicular cuts transition between the perpendicular and said surface by an angle.
3 . The hydraulic spool piece of claim 2 wherein said angle is approximately 10 degrees.
4 . The hydraulic spool piece of claim 2 wherein said angle is in the range of 9 to 10 degrees.
5 . The hydraulic spool piece of claim 2 wherein said angle is in the range of 1.5 to 25 degrees.
6 . The hydraulic spool piece of claim 2 wherein said spool piece has a cylindrical shape and associated surface.
7 . The hydraulic spool piece of claim 6 wherein said angle is approximately 10 degrees.
