Abstract
Containers for nail polish and other liquid cosmetics are produced with substantially transparent cyclo-olefin copolymers, preferably norbornene-ethylene copolymers, blended with tint modifiers having a tint or hue that opposes the tint imparted to the container by the primary cyclo-olefin copolymer. This produces a bottle with a significantly reduced tint, and displays nail polish, other liquid cosmetics and similar materials with less color distortion.

1 . A cosmetic container comprising a substantially transparent primary cyclo-olefin copolymer and a tint modifier, said tint modifier being present in an amount sufficient to give said container a Yellowness Index between about −0.2 and about +0.2.
2 . A container according to claim 1 wherein said primary cyclo-olefin copolymer comprises a copolymer of norbornene and ethylene.
3 . A container according to claim 1 wherein said tint modifier comprises a cyclo-olefin copolymer and a coloring agent.
4 . A container according to claim 3 wherein said tone modifier comprises a copolymer of norbornene and ethylene and said coloring agent, and said primary cyclo-olefin copolymer comprise copolymers of norbornene and ethylene.
5 . A container according to claim 4 wherein said tint modifier has substantially the same composition as said primary cyclo-olefin copolymer, but has enhanced flow properties.
6 . A container according to claim 4 wherein said coloring agent comprises a blue pigment.
7 . A container according to claim 2 wherein said cyclo-olefin copolymer has a glass transition temperature between about 80° C. and about 180° C.
8 . A container according to claim 2 wherein said cyclo-olefin copolymer has a glass transition temperature of about 160° C.
9 . A container in accordance with claim 1 having a comparative Yellowness Index of less than about +0.2.
10 . A container in accordance with claim 1 having a Yellowness Index between about 0 and about +0.2.
11 . A container in accordance with claim 1 having a Yellowness Index between about 0 and about +0.1.
12 . A nail polish bottle comprising a cyclo-olefin copolymer having a glass transition temperature of at least about 160° C. and a tint modifier in a quantity sufficient to give said bottle a Yellowness Index of about −0.2 to about +0.2.
13 . A nail polish bottle according to claim 12 wherein said cyclo-olefin copolymer comprises a copolymer of norbornene and ethylene.
14 . A nail polish bottle according to claim 12 wherein said tint modifier comprises a cyclo-olefin copolymer and a coloring agent.
15 . A nail polish bottle according to claim 14 wherein said cyclo-olefin copolymer comprises a copolymer of norbornene and ethylene.
16 . A method for producing cosmetic containers comprising:
providing a cyclo-olefin copolymer; blending a coloring agent with said copolymer in an amount sufficient to give said container a comparative Yellowness Index of less than about +0.2; and molding said containers from said blended cyclo-olefin copolymer and coloring agent.
17 . A method in accordance with claim 16 wherein said coloring agent is blended with said copolymer in an amount sufficient to give said container a comparative Yellowness Index of between about 0 and about +0.1.
18 . A method according to claim 16 wherein said copolymer is prepared by co-polymerizing ethylene and norbornene with a metallocene catalyst.
