Methods and compositions for topical wound treatment
Abstract
Compositions for improved treatment of wounds on a patient. A first composition having a safe and effective amount of lidocaine, wherein the composition is topically applied to a wound on a patient. A second composition having a safe and effective amount of lidocaine and a safe and effective amount of topical antibiotic, wherein the composition is topically applied to a wound on a patient. A method for treating a patient having a skin wound by locally administering a safe and effective amount of lidocaine and an antibiotic compound in the skin wound such that healing of the skin wound is enhanced.

1 . A composition for use in the treatment of wounds, comprising a safe and effective amount of lidocaine in a carrier, wherein the composition is topically applied to a wound on a patient.
2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the lidocaine comprises viscous lidocaine.
3 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a safe and effective amount of a topical antibiotic compound.
4 . The composition of claim 3 , wherein the topical antibiotic comprises chloramphenicol, chlortetracycline, clindamycin, erythromycin, gramicidin, gentamicin, metronidazole, mupiroicin, neomycin, polymyxin B, bacitracin, silver sulfadiazine, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, or combinations thereof.
5 . The composition of claim 3 , wherein the topical antibiotic is polymyxin B sulfate.
6 . The composition of claim 3 , wherein the topical antibiotic is polymyxin B sulfate and bacitracin zinc.
7 . The composition of claim 1 , comprising from about 5 mg to about 40 mg lidocaine hydrochloride per gram of the composition.
8 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a wax matrix.
9 . The composition of claim 8 , wherein the wax matrix comprises Bag Balm®.
10 . The composition of claim 8 , wherein the wax matrix comprises zinc oxide ointment.
11 . The composition of claim 3 , comprising from about 5 mg to about 40 mg lidocaine hydrochloride and about 250 units to about 2000 units polymyxin B sulfate and about 10 units to about 100 units bacitracin zinc per gram of the composition.
12 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising oil of wintergreen.
13 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more enzymes for debridement.
14 . A wound dressing comprising a bandage, a safe and effective amount of lidocaine in a carrier, wherein the wound dressing enhances healing of a wound.
15 . The wound dressing of claim 14 , wherein the bandage comprises cotton, gauze, fiberglass or synthetic material.
16 . The wound dressing of claim 14 , further comprising a safe and effective amount of a topical antibiotic compound.
17 . The wound dressing of claim 14 , further comprising saline.
18 . The wound dressing of claim 14 , further comprising a disinfectant component.
19 . A method for treating a patient having a skin wound, comprising locally administering a safe and effective amount of lidocaine in a carrier to the skin wound such that the healing of the skin wound is enhanced.
20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising locally administering a safe and effective amount of a topical antibiotic compound to the skin wound.
21 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising covering the lidocaine and antibiotic compound in the skin wound with a dressing.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the dressing comprises cotton, gauze, fiberglass or synthetic material.
23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the dressing comprises a polymeric film.
24 . An article of manufacture comprising packaging material and a composition comprising a safe and effective amount of lidocaine in a carrier, wherein the packaging material comprises a label that indicates the composition is useful for treating a patient having a skin wound, and wherein local administration of the composition enhances healing of a skin wound.
25 . The article of manufacture of claim 24 , wherein the composition further comprises a safe and effective amount of a topical antibiotic compound.
26 . A pre-packaged wound dressing contained in a package, comprising:
a safe and effective amount of lidocaine in a carrier; a safe and effective amount of a topical antibiotic compound; and a bandage configured to cover a wound.
27 . The pre-packaged wound dressing of claim 26 , wherein the lidocaine and the antibiotic compound are contained in a storage container.
28 . The pre-packaged wound dressing of claim 26 , wherein the bandage is coated on at least one side with the lidocaine and the antibiotic compound.
29 . A method for treating a patient having a skin wound, comprising:
applying a zinc oxide ointment around the exterior of the wound; applying lidocaine and an antibiotic compound to a dressing; applying the dressing to the wound; and securing the dressing to the patient.
30 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising placing a packing material containing lidocaine and an antibiotic compound directly in the wound.
31 . The method of claim 29 , wherein securing the dressing comprises placing a polymer film over the dressing and utilizing the zinc oxide ointment surrounding the exterior of the wound to secure the polymer film to the patient.
