Abstract

An aqueous acidic lubricating composition for use in the mucosal areas of the human body, that provides at least 30 ppm of available iodine. There is also provided a method of treating vaginitis preventing STD and group B streptococcus.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . In an aqueous lubricating gel for use in mucosal areas of the human body, the improvement which comprises an antimicrobial composition consisting of an effective amount of an inorganic monobasic iodide salt to provide at least 30 ppm of available iodine, an organic acid having up to six carbon atoms, an inorganic phosphate buffer, and at least one oxidizing agent, said gel having a pH of 3.2 to 5.5.  
     
     
         2 . The gel of  claim 1  wherein said monobasic iodide salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium iodide and potassium iodide.  
     
     
         3 . The gel of  claim 1  wherein said organic acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid.  
     
     
         4 . The gel of  claim 1  wherein said oxidizing agent is an alkaline salt of perborate or percarbonate.  
     
     
         5 . The gel of  claim 1  wherein said oxidizing agent is urea hydrogen peroxide.  
     
     
         6 . The gel of  claim 1  wherein said phosphate buffer is a monobasic or dibasic potassium hydrogen phosphate.  
     
     
         7 . The gel of  claim 1  comprising hydroxyalkyl cellulose.  
     
     
         8 . The gel of  claim 1  comprising an organic gum.  
     
     
         9 . The gel of  claim 8  wherein said gum is carageenan gum.  
     
     
         10 . The gel of  claim 1  comprising hydrophilic or lypophylic gelling agents.  
     
     
         11 . The gel of  claim 1  including an anti-HIV surfactant.  
     
     
         12 . The gel of  claim 1  including glycerin polyacrylate.  
     
     
         13 . An aqueous gel comprising about 0.01 to 0.5% by weight of sodium iodide, about 0.01 to 1.5% by weight of citric acid, an alkaline salt of hydrogen phosphate, about 0.001 to 0.06% by weight of sodium perborate or percarbonate, water and a gelling agent, said gel having a pH of 3.5 to 5.5 and at least 30 ppm of available iodine.  
     
     
         14 . The combination of a condom and the gel of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         15 . A method of preventing vaginitis, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases or the transmission of group B streptococcus comprising administering to mucosal areas of the human body an aqueous composition comprising an antimicrobial composition consisting of an effective amount of an inorganic monobasic iodide salt to provide at least 30 ppm of available iodine, an organic acid having up to six carbon atoms, a phosphate buffer, and at least one oxidizing agent, said composition having a pH of 3.2 to 5.5.  
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15  wherein said composition is a liquid.  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 15  wherein said composition is a gel.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17  wherein said gel is formed with a natural gum.  
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 15  wherein said composition contains an antimicrobial surfactant.  
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 15  wherein said composition contains hydrophilic or lipophilic gelling agents.
