Claims

Abstract

A method and apparatus for providing a flashing system for a chimney-bonnet positioned on a chimney of a building structure. The flashing system includes at least one flashing member including at least an abutting portion and a flange portion. The abutting portion is formed to extend from the flange portion and is formed and configured to be positioned between a bottom portion of the chimney-bonnet and a surface of the chimney. The flange portion is formed to extend outwardly downward from the abutting portion and is formed and configured to direct moisture away from the surface of the chimney.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A flashing system configured for use with a chimney-bonnet positioned on a chimney of a 
 building structure, comprising: 
 at least one flashing member including: 
 an abutting portion configured to be positioned between a bottom portion of the chimney-bonnet and the chimney; and  
 a flange portion extending from said abutting portion, said flange portion extending outwardly downward from said abutting portion configured to direct moisture away from the surface of the chimney.  
 
   
     
     
         2 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member further comprises an extension portion configured to extend inward from an end of said flange portion.  
     
     
         3 . The flashing system of  claim 2 , wherein said extension portion further comprises a downward extension at an end thereof configured to extend downward along side the chimney.  
     
     
         4 . The flashing system of  claim 3 , wherein said downward extension extends a distance to facilitate an effective moisture barrier.  
     
     
         5 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member comprises a first flashing member, a second flashing member, a third flashing member and a fourth flashing member each including said abutting portion and said flange portion and each configured to be positioned on a corresponding first, second, third and fourth side of the chimney adjacent the chimney-bonnet.  
     
     
         6 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member comprises a plurality of flashing members each including said abutting portion and said flange portion and each configured to be positioned on a corresponding plurality of sides of the chimney adjacent the chimney-bonnet.  
     
     
         7 . The flashing system of  claim 5 , wherein each of said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member is formed into an integral structure.  
     
     
         8 . The flashing system of  claim 6 , wherein each of said plurality of flashing members is formed into an integral structure.  
     
     
         9 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member comprises a integral structure.  
     
     
         10 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member comprises a metallic material.  
     
     
         11 . The flashing system of  claim 1 , wherein said at least one flashing member comprises a polymeric material.  
     
     
         12 . A flashing system configured to be positioned with a chimney-bonnet for reducing moisture intrusion at a roof structure and chimney interface of a building structure, comprising: 
 at least one flashing member including: 
 an abutting portion configured to be positioned between the chimney-bonnet and the chimney;  
 a flange portion extending from said abutting portion, said flange portion extending outwardly downward from said abutting portion, configured to direct moisture away from the chimney; and  
 an extension portion configured to extend inward from an end of said flange portion and configured to extend to the chimney, wherein said extension portion includes a downward extension at an end thereof configured to be positioned against the chimney a distance configured to facilitate an effective moisture barrier.  
   
     
     
         13 . A flashing system configured for use in conjunction with a chimney-bonnet positioned on a chimney of a building structure, the flashing system comprising: 
 at least one flashing member having an abutting portion and a flange portion, said flange portion extending from said abutting portion, said abutting portion configured to be positioned between a bottom portion of the chimney-bonnet and a surface of the chimney and, said flange portion extending outwardly downward from said abutting portion configured to direct moisture away from the surface of the chimney;    wherein said flashing member includes an extension portion configured to extend back toward the chimney, said flashing member being configured to extend outward beyond and over an exterior treatment applied to the chimney.    
     
     
         14 . A means for flashing a chimney in conjunction with a chimney-bonnet positioned on the chimney of a building structure, comprising: 
 flashing means for reducing water ingress by directing water outward overtop an exterior treatment of the chimney.    
     
     
         15 . A method of providing a flashing system for use with a chimney-bonnet positioned on a chimney of a building structure, the method comprising: 
 forming at least one flashing member including an abutting portion and a flange portion;    configuring said abutting portion to be positioned between the chimney-bonnet and the chimney; and    configuring said flange portion to extend outwardly downward from said abutting portion to direct moisture away from the chimney.    
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming further comprises forming an extension portion configured to extend inward from an end of said flange portion.  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said forming said extension member comprises configuring said extension member to abut with the surface of the chimney.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said forming said extension member comprises forming a downward extension extending downward configured to extend along side the chimney.  
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein said forming said downward extension comprises configuring said downward extension to extend a distance configured to facilitate an effective moisture barrier.  
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming said at least one flashing member comprises forming a first flashing member, a second flashing member, a third flashing member and a fourth flashing member each including said abutting portion and said flange portion and each configured to be positioned on a corresponding first, second, third and fourth side of the chimney adjacent the chimney-bonnet.  
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member comprises forming each of said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member into an integral structure.  
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming comprises forming said at least one flashing member into a unitary structure.  
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming comprises forming said at least one flashing member from a metallic material.  
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said forming comprises forming said at least one flashing member from a polymeric material.  
     
     
         25 . A method of installing a flashing system configured for use with a chimney-bonnet positioned over a chimney of a building structure, the method comprising: 
 providing at least one flashing member including an abutting portion and a flange portion, said flange portion extending outwardly downward from said abutting portion; and    disposing said at least one flashing member so that said abutting portion is positioned against a surface at an upper portion of the chimney so that said flange portion extends outwardly downward from said chimney to substantially direct moisture away from the chimney.    
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said disposing comprises disposing said abutting portion between the chimney and the chimney-bonnet after placement of the chimney-bonnet.  
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said providing said at least one flashing member comprises providing a first flashing member, a second flashing member, a third flashing member and a fourth flashing member each including said abutting portion and said flange portion and each configured to be positioned on a corresponding first, second, third and fourth side of the upper portion of the chimney.  
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 27 , wherein said disposing said abutting portion comprises disposing said abutting portion for each of said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member to abut with said corresponding first, second, third and forth side of the surface at the upper portion of the chimney.  
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 28 , further comprising interconnecting each of said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member with fasteners.  
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 27 , wherein said providing said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member comprises preliminarily interconnecting each of said first flashing member, said second flashing member, said third flashing member and said fourth flashing member into a one-piece structure prior to said disposing each thereof to abut with the upper portion of the chimney.  
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said disposing said abutting portion further comprises securing said at least one flashing member to said chimney.  
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 31 , wherein said securing comprises securing said at least one flashing member by fastening said abutting portion to said chimney with fasteners.  
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 25 , further comprising securing said at least one flashing member to said chimney by inserting fasteners through a lower portion of the chimney-bonnet and through said abutting portion of said at least one flashing member and into the upper portion of the chimney.  
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said disposing comprises disposing said at least one flashing member in preparation to receive an exterior treatment over an outer surface of the chimney to be formed proximately to an underside of said flange portion of said at least one flashing member.  
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein said providing said at least one flashing member comprises providing an extension portion configured to extend inward from an end of said flange portion and a downward extension at an end of said extension portion configured to extend downward along side the chimney a distance configured to facilitate an effective moisture barrier.  
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 35 , further comprising securing said at least one flashing member to the chimney.  
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 36 , wherein said securing comprises securing said at least one flashing member by fastening said abutting portion to said chimney and fastening said downward extension to said chimney with fasteners.  
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 35 , further comprising applying a sealant between said chimney and said downward extension.  
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 35 , wherein said disposing comprises disposing said at least one flashing member in preparation to receive an exterior treatment over an outer surface of the chimney to extend at least partially over said downward extension of said at least one flashing member.
