Abstract

A spreadable adhesive composition and an applicator ( 1 ) for dispensing a spreadable viscous adhesive composition onto a substrate. The spreadable adhesive composition is a spreadable non-flowable cyanoacrylate adhesive composition which contains an odour masking ingredient compatible with the composition. The composition is intended to be spread by the applicator ( 1 ). The applicator ( 1 ) for spreading the composition includes a closed head ( 5 ) with a sealable dispensing aperture ( 9 ) penetrating the head ( 5 ). A spreading surface ( 19 ) is located on the exterior of the head ( 5 ) around the dispensing aperture ( 9 ) and is used to spread the adhesive onto the substrate. A conduit or delivery means ( 7 ) is also provided to supply the adhesive composition to the dispensing aperture ( 9 ). The applicator ( 1 ) can also include a cap ( 2 ) which fits over and covers the head ( 5 ). The cap ( 2 ) includes a structure ( 14 ) which engages with the dispensing aperture ( 9 ) to seal the aperture ( 9 ) closed preventing adhesive from being dispensed. The invention also provides a container ( 17 ) for holding a spreadable adhesive composition. The invention further provides a pack comprising an applicator ( 1 ) and a container ( 17 ) as described above which a user can assemble to dispense the spreadable adhesive compositions.

. An applicator according to claim 4 or 5 wherein the corner runs from the head toward the body.

. An applicator according to any one of claims 4 to 6 wherein the corner runs about the entire perimeter of the spreading surface.

. An applicator according to any one of claims 4 to 6 wherein the corner is formed by the convergence of two edges of the spreading surface.

. An applicator according to any one of claims 4 to 8 wherein the corner is also formed in the body of the applicator.

. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the spreading surface or applicator is of a generally rectangular shape or is generally wedge-shaped.

. An applicator according to any of the preceding claims in combination with a cap which fits over the head and which has a structure inside the cap for engaging the dispensing aperture so as to close the aperture.

. An applicator for dispensing a viscous adhesive composition onto a substrate, said applicator having a closed head, a sealable valveless dispensing aperture penetrating the head, a wide spreading surface on the exterior of the head around the dispensing aperture, and conduit or delivery means to supply the adhesive composition to the dispensing aperture, in combination with a container holding a viscous adhesive composition.

. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 11 in combination with a container holding a viscous adhesive composition.

. A pack comprising an applicator and container according to claim 12 or claim 13 having complementary engagement means on the applicator and the container respectively.

. A pack comprising an applicator and container according to claim 14 wherein the applicator has cutting means for piercing a closure on the container during the course of interengagement of the engagement means.

. A pack comprising an applicator and container according to any of claims 13 to 15 wherein the container holds an alpha-cyanoacrylate adhesive composition.
