Claims

Abstract

There is disclosed an accommodating intraocular lens for implantation in an eye having an optical axis. The lens comprises an anterior portion which in turn comprises an anterior viewing element and an anterior biasing element. The lens further comprises a posterior portion which in turn comprises a posterior viewing element in spaced relationship to the anterior viewing element and a posterior biasing element. The anterior portion and posterior portion meet at first and second apices of the intraocular lens. The anterior portion and the posterior portion and/or the apices are responsive to force thereon to cause the separation between the viewing elements to change. Additional embodiments and methods are also disclosed.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . An accommodating intraocular lens, comprising: 
 first and second optics, at least one of said optics having refractive power, said optics mounted to move relative to each other along an optical axis in response to action of a ciliary muscle, said first optic formed of a first polymer having a number of recurring units including first-polymer primary recurring units, said second optic formed of a second polymer having a number of recurring units including second-polymer primary recurring units;    wherein no more than about 10 mole percent of the recurring units of said first polymer are the same as said second-polymer primary recurring units and no more than about 10 mole percent of the recurring units of said second polymer are the same as said first-polymer primary recurring units.    
     
     
         2 . The accommodating intraocular lens of  claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first polymer and said second polymer is selected from the group consisting of silicone, acrylic, polymethylmethacrylate, block copolymers of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, styrene-base copolymers, polyvinyl alcohol, polyurethanes, hydrogels, photosensitive silicone.  
     
     
         3 . The accommodating intraocular lens of  claim 1 , wherein said first optic comprises an anterior optic, said second optic comprises a posterior optic, said first polymer comprises silicone, and said second polymer comprises acrylic.  
     
     
         4 . The accommodating intraocular lens of  claim 1 , wherein said first optic comprises an anterior optic, said second optic comprises a posterior optic, said first polymer comprises high-refractive-index silicone, and said second polymer comprises hydrophobic acrylic.  
     
     
         5 . The accommodating intraocular lens of  claim 1 , wherein said first optic comprises an anterior optic, said second optic comprises a posterior optic, said first polymer comprises silicone having a refractive index higher than about 1.43, and said second polymer comprises hydrophobic acrylic.
