Abstract

The present invention provides a method for suppressing hemolytic anemia by selectively ameliorating reticulocyte increase and iron deposition on spleen caused as the side effects of methionine. The present invention also provides an appetite suppressor with reduced such side effects, where threonine is used as the effective ingredient of the suppressor of hemolytic anemia due to methionine and a combination of methionine and threonine is used as the effective ingredient of the appetite suppressor.

1 . A suppressor of methionine-induced anemia, comprising threonine, which may or may not be in a salt form.  
     
     
         2 . The suppressor of anemia of  claim 1 , which is a suppressor of hemolytic anemia.  
     
     
         3 . The suppressor of anemia of  claim 1 , where said suppressor of anemia functions to prevent, ameliorate and/or therapeutically treat reticulocyte increase and iron deposition on spleen.  
     
     
         4 . The suppressor of anemia of  claim 1 , further comprising methionine, which may or may not be in a salt form.  
     
     
         5 . The suppressor of anemia of  claim 4 , wherein said suppressor of anemia is for humans and comprises methionine in an amount sufficient for an intake or dose quantity of 25 to 100 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of methionine and threonine in an amount sufficient for an intake or dose quantity of 20 to 300 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of threonine.  
     
     
         6 . The suppressor of anemia of  claim 4 , which comprises methionine and threonine in a ratio of threonine to methionine of 80 to 300% (by weight) on the basis of the free forms of methionine and threonine.  
     
     
         7 . An appetite suppressor, comprising methionine and threonine, where methionine may or may not be in a salt form and threonine may or may not be in a salt form.  
     
     
         8 . The appetite suppressor of  claim 7 , where said appetite suppressor is substantially free of serine and glycine.  
     
     
         9 . The appetite suppressor of  claim 7 , where said appetite suppressor is for humans and comprises methionine in an amount sufficient for an intake or dose quantity of 25 to 100 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of methionine and threonine in an amount sufficient for an intake or dose quantity of 20 to 300 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of threonine.  
     
     
         10 . The appetite suppressor of  claim 7 , which comprises methionine and threonine in a ratio of threonine to methionine of 80 to 300% (by weight) on the basis of the free forms of methionine and threonine.  
     
     
         11 . A feed, nutritional supplement, food, drink, or pharmaceutical agent, comprising methionine, where said feed, nutritional supplement, food, drink, or pharmaceutical agent comprises threonine so as to ameliorate hemolytic anemia due to methionine.  
     
     
         12 . A method for suppressing, ameliorating, or treating methionine-induced anemia, which comprises administrating to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of threonine or a salt thereof.  
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said anemia is hemolytic anemia.  
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 12 , where said method prevents, ameliorates and/or therapeutically treats reticulocyte increase and iron deposition on the spleen.  
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said threonine is administered in an amount of 20 to 300 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of threonine.  
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said subject is further administered methionine.  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said methionine is administered in an amount of 25 to 100 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of methionine and threonine is administered in an amount of 20 to 300 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of threonine.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said methionine and threonine are administered in a ratio of threonine to methionine of 80 to 300% (by weight) on the basis of the free forms of methionine and threonine.  
     
     
         19 . A method for suppressing appetite, which comprises administrating to a subject in need thereof an appetite-suppressing effective amount of methionine or a salt thereof and an anemia-suppressing effective amount of threonine to a living subject, where methionine or a salt thereof.  
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein said methionine is administered in an amount of 25 to 100 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of methionine and threonine is administered in an amount of 20 to 300 mg/kg/day on the basis of the free form of threonine.  
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein said methionine and threonine are administered in a ratio of threonine to methionine of 80 to 300% (by weight) on the basis of the free forms of methionine and threonine.
