Jewelry, jewelry design and method and apparatus therefor

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of making jewelry including providing an item to be mounted, creating a throughbore in the item, threading an elongated member through the item, providing a finding, providing a laser, and attaching the elongated member to the finding using the laser, whereby the item is suspended adjacent to the finding. The present invention is intended to encompass the method, the apparatus used to accomplish it, and the piece of jewelry or jewelry design which is produced by the method.

I claim:  
     
         1 . A piece of jewelry comprising: 
 a finding;    a gemstone having a throughbore, and movably connected to said finding, wherein the gemstone has a degree of freedom of movement relative to the finding; and    an elongated member with two ends and a length, a portion of said length in said throughbore and the two ends connected to said finding.    
     
     
         2 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , wherein said throughbore has a diameter large enough to accept said elongated member.  
     
     
         3 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , wherein said finding has a first and second aperture, each having a diameter sufficient to accept said elongated member.  
     
     
         4 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , wherein said elongated member is a durable wire.  
     
     
         5 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , further comprising an insert located in said throughbore.  
     
     
         6 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 5 , wherein the insert is a generally rigid tube that is friction fit in the throughbore.  
     
     
         7 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 5 , wherein the portion of said length of said elongated member in said throughbore is also in said insert.  
     
     
         8 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , further comprising a necklace connected to said finding.  
     
     
         9 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 1 , wherein said gemstone is selected from the group consisting of: precious stones, semi-precious stones, non-precious stones, and ornamental pieces.  
     
     
         10 . A piece of jewelry comprising: 
 a finding;    an item to be attached to said finding, said item having a throughbore, and movably connected to said finding; and    a wire having two ends, said wire extending through said throughbore and said two ends in contact with said finding.    
     
     
         11 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 10 , wherein the wire is platinum.  
     
     
         12 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 10 , further comprising a tube located in said throughbore.  
     
     
         13 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 10 , further comprising means for preventing wear on the item from contact with said wire.  
     
     
         14 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 10 , wherein said item to be mounted is a gemstone.  
     
     
         15 . A piece of jewelry comprising: 
 a finding;    a gemstone having a throughbore, and movably connected to said finding, wherein the gemstone has a degree of freedom of movement relative to the finding;    an elongated member with two ends and a length; and    a layer interposed between the gemstone and the elongated member, wherein a portion of said length contacts the layer and the two ends are connected to said finding, wherein more than one half of the gemstone is displayed substantially without visible support means.    
     
     
         16 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 15 , wherein the said layer comprises an insert in the form of cylindrical tube.  
     
     
         17 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 15 , wherein said insert is generally rigid and is friction fit in said throughbore.  
     
     
         18 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 15 , wherein said elongated member is a platinum wire.  
     
     
         19 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 15 , wherein said gemstone is selected from the group consisting of: precious stones, semi-precious stones, non-precious stones, and ornamental pieces.  
     
     
         20 . The piece of jewelry in  claim 15 , further comprising a necklace attached to said finding.
