Claims

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a release coating composition comprising a polymer of butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile polymer having a T g from 0° C. to about 75° C. The present invention is also directed to an article of manufacture having a release coating comprising the polymer for pressure sensitive adhesives.

We claim:  
     
         1 . A method comprising: 
 a) providing an adhesive-coated backing, wherein an adhesive is coated on at least one side of the backing;    b) applying a release coating to one of: 
 i) the backing on the side opposite of the adhesive, wherein the adhesive is coated on only one side of the backing, and  
 ii) at least one substrate to form a release coated substrate; and  
   c) drying the release coating;    and wherein when the release coating is applied to the at least one substrate, the method further comprises one of:    i) contacting the release coated substrate to the adhesive-coated side of the backing, wherein the adhesive is coated on one side of the backing; and    ii) contacting a first release coated substrate to a first side of the adhesive-coated backing and contacting a second release coated substrate to a second side of the adhesive-coated backing, wherein the backing is coated with the adhesive on both sides of the backing, and wherein at least one of the first release coated substrate and the second release coated substrate comprise the release coated substrate,    wherein, the release coating comprises at least one of:    i) a first composition comprising a copolymer having a T g  from 0° C. to about 75° C., wherein the copolymer comprises a reaction product of from greater than 0% to about 50% by weight of acrylonitrile monomer, and from about 50% to less than 100% by weight of butadiene and styrene monomers; and    ii) a second composition comprising a copolymer having a T g  from 46° C. to about 75° C., wherein the copolymer comprises a reaction product of from 0% to about 50% by weight of acrylonitrile monomer, and from about 50% to about 100% by weight of butadiene and styrene monomers.    
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the copolymer reaction product of the release coating comprises from about 15% to about 40% by weight of acrylonitrile monomer and from about 60% to about 85% by weight of butadiene and styrene monomers.  
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the copolymer reaction product of the release coating further comprises from about 0.5% to about 15% by weight of at least one stability enhancing monomer selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylamide, N-methylolacrylamide, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the copolymer reaction product of the release coating comprises from about 0.5% to about 3.0% by weight of acrylic acid monomer, from 0% to about 1.5% by weight of itaconic acid monomer, and from 0.5% to about 3.0% by weight of acrylamide monomer.  
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the release coating further comprises less than or equal to about 20% by weight of a release promoting additive.  
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the release promoting additive is selected from the group consisting of anionic surface active agents, cationic surface active agents, zwitter-ionic surface active agents, non-ionic surface active agents, and mixtures thereof.  
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the release promoting additive is selected from the group consisting of N-alkyl sulfosuccinamates, dialkyl sulfosuccinates, alkyl sulfates and sulfonates, alkyl-polyalkyleneoxidesulfates, alkyl-aryl-polyalkyleneoxidesulfates, alkyl-aryl sulfonates, alkylpolyalkyleneoxides, alkyl-aryl-polyalkyleneoxides, block copolymers of alkyloxides, and mixtures thereof.  
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the release coating further comprises a polymer comprising a reaction product of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of alkylacrylates and alkylmethacrylates, vinylacetates, vinylchlorides, acrylonitriles, siloxanes, organo-siloxanes, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         9 . An article of manufacture, comprising: 
 (a) a backing comprising an adhesive-coated backing side; and    (b) a release coating applied to the other side of the backing of (a) or a separate backing, wherein the release coating comprises a copolymer having a T g  from 46° C. to about 75° C., wherein the copolymer comprises a reaction product of from 0% to about 50% by weight of acrylonitrile monomer, and from about 50% to about 100% by weight of butadiene and styrene monomers;    wherein the release coating is in contact with the adhesive-coated backing side.    
     
     
         10 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the copolymer reaction product comprises from about 15% to about 40% by weight of acrylonitrile monomer and from about 60% to about 85% by weight of butadiene and styrene monomers.  
     
     
         11 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the copolymer reaction product further comprises from about 0.5% to about 15% by weight of at least one stability enhancing monomer selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylamide, N-methylolacrylamide, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         12 . The article of  claim 11 , wherein the copolymer reaction product comprises from about 0.5% to about 3.0% by weight of acrylic acid monomer, from 0% to about 1.5% by weight of itaconic acid monomer, and from 0.5% to about 3.0% by weight of acrylamide monomer.  
     
     
         13 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the release coating further comprises less than or equal to about 20% by weight of a release promoting additive.  
     
     
         14 . The article of  claim 13 , wherein the release promoting additive is selected from the group consisting of anionic surface active agents, cationic surface active agents, zwitter-ionic surface active agents, non-ionic surface active agents, and mixtures thereof.  
     
     
         15 . The article of  claim 14 , wherein the release promoting additive is selected from the group consisting of N-alkyl sulfosuccinamates, dialkyl sulfosuccinates, alkyl sulfates and sulfonates, alkyl-polyalkyleneoxidesulfates, alkyl-aryl-polyalkyleneoxidesulfates, alkyl-aryl sulfonates, alkylpolyalkyleneoxides, alkyl-aryl-polyalkyleneoxides, block copolymers of alkyloxides, and mixtures thereof.  
     
     
         16 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the release coating further comprises a polymer comprising a reaction product of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of alkylacrylates and alkylmethacrylates, vinylacetates, vinylchlorides, acrylonitriles, siloxanes, organo-siloxanes, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         17 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the copolymer has a T g  from 46° C. to about 60° C.  
     
     
         18 . The article of  claim 9 , wherein the release coating further comprises from about 1.0% to about 15% by weight of a release promoting additive.
