Q-pack silencer

Abstract

A silencer for internal combustion engines provides a form factor of a rectangular prism, and includes a box-shaped outer shell lined with a thermal and acoustic isolation material, and containing a set of acoustic elements in a serpentine path inside that layer.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . An apparatus for attenuating the sound emitted from the exhaust of internal combustion engines, comprising: 
 a flat sided, rectangular or “box” shaped outer shell, having at least one inlet and one outlet connection flange;    a thermo-acoustic layer, used to cover the entire inside of the perimeter wall;    a single acoustic element or a plurality of acoustic elements, reactive, absorptive or a combination of reactive and absorptive, arranged and positioned within said shell;    a plurality of chambers, or ducts, for the purpose of directing the gas into the primary attenuating element, then in turn exhausting the gas from each element into the intake of the following element, and finally exhausting the gas from the last element out of the silencer.    
     
     
         2 . The attenuating apparatus of  claim 1 , and the chambers described, are arranged in such a manner as to allow the unit to be specified with entry and exit of the gas through sides, ends, top or bottom of the silencer.  
     
     
         3 . The attenuating apparatus of  claim 1 , and the attenuating elements and chambers described, provide a relatively compact and volume efficient means of exhaust noise attenuation.  
     
     
         4 . The attenuating apparatus of  claim 1 , by the nature of it's “box” shaped construction, will allow the apparatus to be dropped into, and fitted within, a rectangular opening in a plant room or enclosure roof, thus providing a low profile aspect, and facilitating site installation and removal if necessary.
