Abstract

Polymer compositions having reduced molecular weight prepared by a method which comprises subjecting a solid phase polymer to a dose of gamma irradiation sufficient to permit the desired molecular weight reduction to occur.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A reduced-molecular weight composition prepared by the process consisting of the steps of:
providing an initial polymer in the solid phase having an initial molecular weight, and subjecting the polymer to irradiation in a dosage amount sufficient to reduce the molecular weight of the polymer to a final molecular weight that is lower than the initial molecular weigh to thereby obtain a substantially pure polymer product having the reduced molecular weight.

2 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer is in powder form.

3 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer is a polysaccharide polymer.

4 . The composition of claim 3 wherein the polymer is hyaluronic acid.

5 . The composition of claim 3 wherein the polymer is carboxymethyl cellulose.

6 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the molecular structure of the polymer is intact after reducing the molecular weight of the polymer.

7 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the irradiation used is gamma irradiation.

8 . The composition of claim 7 wherein the dosage level of the gamma irradiation is from about 1 kGy to about 120 kGy.

9 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a polydispersity index substantially similar to the initial polymer.

10 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polydispersity index of polymer product is less than 10% higher than the polydispersity index of the initial polymer.

11 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 340 KDa or less.

12 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 290 KDa or less.

13 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 260 KDa or less.

14 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 210 KDa or less.

15 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 180 KDa or less.

16 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 110 KDa or less.

17 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer product has a final molecular weight of 90 KDa or less.

18 . The composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer has an initial molecular weight of about 1100 KDa or more.
