Hollow door closet, method of making, and kit for making, including a rigid foam backing

Abstract

A method and kit for making a hollow door closet for holding articles. The method includes the steps of providing an existing hollow door, removing at least one section of the existing hollow door, and hingedly replacing the at least one section of the existing hollow door in order to make at least one secondary door, the secondary door providing access to the interior of the hollow door. The kit includes at least one hinge element for hingedly attaching cut-out sections of an existing hollow door for use as secondary doors in a hollow door closet. The kit may also include at least one element selected from the group consisting of a backing, a cutting device for removing a section of an existing hollow door in order to form a secondary door, a handle, a package of T-type or other such pins, and combinations of the above. The hollow door closet itself includes a door having a hollow interior, a volume of the hollow interior bounded at least by a backing and at least one sidewall. At least one secondary door is mounted to the door by a hinge, the secondary door further providing a boundary of the volume and including an interior wall and an exterior wall. At least one hooking device, such as a “T” -type straight pin, may be mounted to the backing or to the interior wall.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A hollow door closet for holding articles, comprising: 
 a door having a hollow interior, a volume of said hollow interior bounded at least by a rigid foam backing and at least one sidewall; and    at least one secondary door mounted to the door by a hinge, said secondary door further providing a boundary of said volume and including an interior wall and an exterior wall.    
     
     
         2 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , further comprising at least one hooking device mounted to said rigid foam backing or to said interior wall.  
     
     
         3 . The hollow door closet of  claim 2 , wherein the at least one hooking device is a “T”-type straight pin.  
     
     
         4 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , wherein the foam is selected from the group consisting of: EPS, ethafoam, polyethylene, polystyrene, polylam, and Styrofoam.  
     
     
         5 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one secondary door includes two secondary doors.  
     
     
         6 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , further comprising a molding attached to the door, and wherein a hinge of the at least one secondary door is attached to the molding and to the secondary door.  
     
     
         7 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , further comprising a molding attached to the secondary door, and wherein a hinge of the at least one secondary door is attached to the molding and to the door.  
     
     
         8 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , further comprising a layer of fabric attached to the foam.  
     
     
         9 . The hollow door closet of  claim 8 , wherein the fabric is selected from the group consisting of: satin and velvet and other similar materials.  
     
     
         10 . The hollow door closet of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one secondary door is made of the same material as a material of the door.  
     
     
         11 . A hollow door closet for holding articles, comprising: 
 a door having a hollow interior, a volume of said hollow interior bounded at least by a foam backing capable of withstanding multiple insertions of a pin without loss of resiliency, and at least one sidewall; and    at least one secondary door mounted to the door by a hinge, said secondary door further providing a boundary of said volume and including an interior wall and an exterior wall.    
     
     
         12 . A kit for making a hollow door closet from an existing hollow door, comprising: 
 A hinge; and    At least one element selected from the group consisting of: a cutting device for cutting a section out of a hollow door, a backing for mounting to an interior wall of a hollow door, and combinations of the above.    
     
     
         13 . The kit of  claim 12 , wherein the backing includes rigid foam.  
     
     
         14 . The kit of  claim 12 , wherein the cutting device is a jigsaw.  
     
     
         15 . A method for making a hollow door closet from an existing hollow door, comprising: 
 Providing a hollow door;    Cutting a section from the hollow door; and    Hingedly remounting the section, or a piece shaped similarly to the section, to the hollow door.    
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein the cutting is performed by a jigsaw.  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein the piece is shaped substantially the same as the section.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising mounting a backing to an interior wall of the hollow door, the interior wall at least partially facing the hingedly-mounted cut-out section.  
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the backing includes rigid foam.
