Abstract

A vitamin B 12 supplement composition comprising vitamin B 12 with and/or without added folic acid that is essentially free of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, as well as iron is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods of using this vitamin composition to prevent brain and nervous system damage, such as peripheral nerve damage, as well as pernicious anemia, such as where such anemia is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B 12 deficiency.

What is claimed:  
     
         1 . A process of preventing vitamin B 12 -deficiency induced brain and nervous system damage in a human at risk thereof comprising administering to said human a composition comprising at least about 25 μg of vitamin B 12  wherein said vitamin B 12  is substantially free of antioxidants.  
     
     
         2 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said composition comprises at least about 25 μg to about 1000 μg of vitamin B 12 .  
     
     
         3 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said composition comprises about 100 μg of vitamin B 12 .  
     
     
         4 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said human is at least about 50 years of age.  
     
     
         5 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said human exhibits gastric atrophy.  
     
     
         6 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said brain and nervous system damage is selected from the group consisting of brain cell damage and peripheral nerve damage.  
     
     
         7 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said is free of vitamin C and iron (Fe).  
     
     
         8 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said vitamin B 12  has been tested for the presence of antioxidant and shown to be free of antioxidant.  
     
     
         9 . The process of    claim 1    wherein said composition also comprises folic acid.  
     
     
         10 . A process of preventing pernicious anemia in a human at risk thereof comprising administering to said human a composition comprising at least about 25 μg of vitamin B 12  wherein said vitamin B 12  is substantially free of antioxidants.  
     
     
         11 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said composition comprises at least about 25 μg to about 1000 μg of vitamin B 12 .  
     
     
         12 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said composition comprises about 100 μg of vitamin B 12 .  
     
     
         13 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said human exhibits gastric atrophy.  
     
     
         14 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said antioxidant is vitamin C.  
     
     
         15 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said vitamin B 12  is free of iron (Fe).  
     
     
         16 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said vitamin B 12  is free of added antioxidant.  
     
     
         17 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said vitamin B 12  has been tested for the presence of antioxidant and shown to be free of antioxidant.  
     
     
         18 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said composition also comprises folic acid.  
     
     
         19 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said composition is in the form of a smart pill.  
     
     
         20 . The process of    claim 10    wherein said human is at least about 50 years of age.
