Abstract

A method for diagnosing Crohn's disease is described. The method assays for the presence of an immune response to S. mutans antigens in a sample from a patient in need of such diagnosis.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A method of diagnosing Crohn's disease in a patient in need of such diagnosis, wherein said method comprises detecting an immune response to  S. mutans  or an  S. mutans  antigen in a sample from said patient, and diagnosing said disease on the basis of the presence or absence of said response.  
     
     
         2 . The method of    claim 1   , wherein said method detects  S. mutans  antibodies in said sample.  
     
     
         3 . The method of    claim 1   , wherein said method detects  S. mutans  antigens in said sample.  
     
     
         4 . The method of    claim 1   , wherein said method comprises measuring the effect of antigens of  S. mutans  upon proliferation in a sample of cells from said patient.  
     
     
         5 . The method of any of claims  1 - 4 , wherein said patient is an animal.  
     
     
         6 . The method of any of claims  1 - 4 , wherein said patient is a human.
