Wheel stud replacement kit

Abstract

The stud replacement kit of the present invention operates by supplying force to the inside portion of a damaged stud and pushing that stud forward and out of the wheel. The kit of the present invention comprises a pressure tool that supplies force to a stud. This pressure tool fit around the wheel and damaged stud; and a spacer that fit between the front of the wheel and the pressure tool. This spacer serves primarily to catch the stud once removed. In operation, the broken or damaged stud is removed by placing the placing the pressure tool and spacer around the stud to be replaced. A stud screw mechanism in the pressure tool is rotated to cause the tool to apply force to the stud primarily on the backside of the wheel. This force is increased until it overcomes the force that holds the stud in the wheel. At this point, the force of the pressure tool on the stud causes the stud to move in the desired direction for removal.

We claim:  
     
         7 . A kit for installing a wheel stud in a vehicle wheel comprising: 
 a) a clamping bracket having an inner side, an outer side and a bridge portion that connects said inner and outer sides, said inner side designed to be positioned between a vehicle axle and a vehicle wheel and above or below the wheel hub, and said clamping bracket also having an opening in each of said outer side and inner sides of said bracket, said inner side opening providing clearance for a new stud during installation;    b) a threaded pressure rod, which passes through the opening in said outer side of said clamping bracket, said rod decreases the open space between the outer and inner sides of said clamping bracket and thereby increasing the pressure between said sides and forcing a new stud into a stud slot in the wheel and;    c) a pressure plate between and in contact with said pressure rod and the new wheel stud, said pressure plate having a surface cross-section area greater than the cross-section area of said pressure rod, the new wheel stud and wheel stud slot.    
     
     
         34 . The installation kit of claim  7  wherein said pressure rod comprises: 
 a flat inner head which is in contact with said pressure plate; and  
 a multi-sided end for turning said pressure rod in order to tighten or loosen said clamping bracket.  
 
     
     
         35 . The installation kit of claim  34  wherein said multi-sided end can be a cap to fit over said multi-sided end and said inner flat head can be cap to cover said inner head.  
     
     
         36 . The installation kit of claim  35  wherein both said caps can have threads to enable them to screw into the pressure rod to secure said caps to each end of said pressure rod.
