Alkenone-based formulations for topical applications

Abstract

The use of long-chain alkenones to impart desired characteristics in personal care compositions for topical applications is described. The preparation of mixtures long-chain alkenones and synthetic derivatives thereof is presented. Examples of compositions include abrasive soaps, with alkenones serving as natural exfoliating agents. Alkenones and their derivatives can serve as emollients, occlusive agents, stabilizing agents, binding agents, thickening agents, surfactants, and antimicrobials.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 
     
         1 . A personal care composition, comprising:
 at least one compound of Formula (I):   
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein
 R1 is methyl or ethyl; and 
 R2 is a C30-45 alkenyl having at least one trans double carbon-carbon bond, or R2 is a C30-45 alkyl; provided that the compound of Formula (I) is not 
 
       
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
     
     
         2 . The personal care composition of  claim 1 , wherein the personal care composition comprises greater than 70% by weight of compounds of Formula (I). 
     
     
         3 . The personal care composition of  claim 1 , wherein the personal care composition comprises greater than 75% by weight of compounds of Formula (I). 
     
     
         4 . The personal care composition of  claim 1 , wherein the personal care composition is white in color in reference to a total haptophyte microalgae extract. 
     
     
         5 . The personal care composition of  claim 4 , wherein the personal care composition is brilliant white in color. 
     
     
         6 . The personal care composition of  claim 1 , wherein the personal care composition has a melting point of between 55° C. and 70° C. 
     
     
         7 . A method for non-therapeutic treatment of a human skin, the method comprising:
 selecting the personal care composition of  claim 1 ; and   topically applying to skin in need thereof the personal care composition of  claim 1 .
