Abstract

System and method are provided for searching, writing, editing, and publishing waveform shape information. A publishing module provides a shape data file from sets of parameters. Each set of parameters comprises a full scale value (FSy) for a yValue defined by a shape code value; a maximum value for binary file data values, each binary file data value having a number of bits, the maximum value being less than the number two raised to the power of the number of bits of the binary file data values; a full scale file data value, the full scale value being less than the maximum value for the binary file data values and equal to an integer multiple of FSy; and the binary file data values corresponding to the yValues calculated by multiplying the yValue by the full scale file data value divided by FSy.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A system for generating a shape data file for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms, comprising:
 a processor; 
 an input coupled to the processor and configured to receive a set of parameters from a user, the set of parameters comprising:
 a full scale value (FSy) for a yValue defined by a shape code value; 
 a maximum value for binary file data values, each binary file data value having a number of bits, the maximum value being less than the number two raised to the power of the number of bits of the binary file data values; 
 a full scale file data value, the full scale value being less than the maximum value for the binary file data values and equal to an integer multiple of FSy; and 
 the binary file data values corresponding to the yValues calculated by multiplying the yValue by the full scale file data value divided by FSy; 
 
 a memory comprising instructions executable by the processor for generating a shape data file from the user-entered parameters; and 
 storage configured to store the shape data file, whereby the shape data file is saved for sale or for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms. 
 
     
     
       2. The system of  claim 1 , wherein the memory further comprises instructions executable by the processor for receiving changes to the set of parameters from the user, editing the shape data file in accordance with changed parameters, and storing the edited shape data file in the storage. 
     
     
       3. A method for providing a shape data file for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms, the method comprising:
 receiving from a user a set of parameters, the set comprising:
 a full scale value (FSy) for a yValue defined by a shape code value; 
 a maximum value for binary file data values, each binary file data value having a number of bits, the maximum value being less than the number two raised to the power of the number of bits of the binary file data values; 
 a full scale file data value, the full scale value being less than the maximum value for the binary file data values and equal to an integer multiple of FSy; and 
 the binary file data values corresponding to the yValues calculated by multiplying the yValue by the full scale file data value divided by FSy; 
 
 providing a shape data file from the user-entered parameters and for generating a data file; and 
 storing the shape data file for sale or for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms. 
 
     
     
       4. The method of  claim 3 , further comprising receiving changes to the set of parameters, editing the shape data file in accordance with the changed parameters, and storing the edited shape data file. 
     
     
       5. A system for generating a shape data file for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms, comprising:
 an input to receive from a user a full scale value (FSy) for shape code values used to provide shape file data values and to receive a number of bits used to represent the file data values; 
 a memory; 
 a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to determine from FSy and the received number of bits:
 a maximum file data value; and 
 a full scale file data value; 
 
 wherein:
 the maximum file data value is less than a number of states provided by the number of bits; and 
 the full scale file data value is less than or equal to the maximum file data value and equal to an integer multiple of FSy; 
 
 the processor further configured to execute instructions to generate a shape data file from the user-entered FSy; and 
 storage configured to store the shape data file, whereby the shape data file is saved for sale or for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms. 
 
     
     
       6. The system of  claim 5 , wherein file data values are calculated as:
 File Data Value=(Shape Code Value) times (Full Scale File Data Value) divided by (FSy). 
 
     
     
       7. A data file generator for generating a waveform data file for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms, the data file generator comprising:
 a processor; 
 a memory storing instructions executable by the processor for:
 receiving a shape code xValue that defines horizontal coordinates of break points of a shape; and 
 removing from the received xValue all common factors other than the number one to provide a minimum form of the xValue; 
 generating data having a width equal to an integer multiple of the sum of the members of the minimum form of the xValue; 
 an output to provide the generated data; and 
 storage configured to store a data file comprising the generated data, whereby the data file is saved for sale or for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms. 
 
 
     
     
       8. A method for generating a data file for generating a waveform data file for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms, the data file generator comprising:
 receiving a shape code xValue that defines horizontal coordinates of break points of a shape; and 
 removing from the received xValue all common factors other than the number one to provide a minimum form of the xValue;
 generating data having a width equal to an integer multiple of the sum of the members of the minimum form of the xValue; 
 outputting the generated data; and 
 storing a data file comprising the generated data, whereby the data file is saved for sale or for use by a waveform generator to generate waveforms.
