Claims

Abstract

A monitoring apparatus obtains image data captured by an image capturing apparatus, generates a background image based on the image data, performs detection processing of a moving object using the image data and the background image, and sets a wait time from a start of generation of the background image to a start of the detection processing based on a condition concerning the detection processing.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. An image processing apparatus comprising:
 a computer that executes instructions that, when executed by the computer, cause the computer to function as: 
 (1) an obtaining unit configured to obtain an image captured by an image capturing unit; 
 (2) a generation unit configured to generate a background image based on the image; 
 (3) a detection unit configured to detect a foreground object using the image and the background image; 
 (4) a determination unit configured to determine a type of detection processing which is to be performed; and 
 (5) a setting unit configured to set a wait time from a start of generation of the background image by the generation unit to a start of detection processing related to the foreground object, 
 wherein the wait time is determined according to the type of the detection processing which is to be performed, and the wait time is determined according to a length of a time in which the detection of the foreground object is to be continued in the type of detection processing. 
 
     
     
       2. The apparatus according to  claim 1 , wherein the type of the detection processing corresponds to (a) detection of passage of the foreground object, (b) detection of object abandonment, (c) detection of object removal, or (d) detection of tampering. 
     
     
       3. The apparatus according to  claim 1 , wherein the wait time is determined according to a type, among activated types of detection processing, for which a length of a time in which the detection of the foreground object is to be continued is longest. 
     
     
       4. The apparatus according to  claim 1 , wherein a length of a time from the start of the generation of the background image by the generation unit and a length of a period in which a foreground object can continuously be detected as a foreground object are proportional to each other during a time until the length of the period reaches a maximum value, and
 wherein the setting unit sets the wait time by setting the length of the time from the start of the generation of the background image by the generation unit until the length of the period reaches the maximum value, based on a variation amount in the image. 
 
     
     
       5. The apparatus according to  claim 4 , wherein the setting unit sets the length of the time from the start of the generation of the background image by the generation unit until the length of the period reaches the maximum value to be shorter as the variation amount is smaller. 
     
     
       6. The apparatus according to  claim 1 , wherein, for each type of the detection processing, the detection processing is associated with a predetermined time including at least from (a) a time at which the background image is generated to (b) a time at which the detection processing is performed. 
     
     
       7. The apparatus according to  claim 1 , wherein the setting unit is configured to set the wait time from a start of generation of the background image by the generation unit to a start of detection processing related to the foreground object based on a variation amount in the image. 
     
     
       8. An image processing system including an image processing apparatus and an image capturing apparatus,
 wherein the image processing apparatus comprises a computer that executes instructions that, when executed by the computer, cause the computer to function as: 
 (1) an obtaining unit configured to obtain an image captured by the image capturing apparatus; 
 (2) a generation unit configured to generate a background image based on the image; 
 (3) a detection unit configured to detect a foreground object using the image and the background image; 
 (4) a determination unit configured to determinate a type of detection processing which is to be performed; and 
 (5) a setting unit configured to set a wait time from a start of generation of the background image by the generation unit to a start of detection processing related to the foreground object, and 
 wherein the wait time is determined according to the type of the detection processing which is to be performed, and the wait time is determined according to a length of a time in which the detection of the foreground object is to be continued in the type of detection processing. 
 
     
     
       9. A method of controlling an image processing apparatus that (a) obtains an image captured by an image capturing apparatus, (b) generates a background image based on the image, and (c) detects a foreground object using the image and the background image, the method comprising:
 determining a type of detection processing which is to be performed; and 
 setting a wait time from a start of generation of the background image to a start of detection processing related to the foreground object, 
 wherein the wait time is determined according to the type of the detection processing which is to be performed, and the wait time is determined according to a length of a time in which the detection of the foreground object is to be continued in the type of detection processing. 
 
     
     
       10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing a computer program configured to cause a computer, the computer being provided in an image processing apparatus that (a) obtains an image captured by an image capturing apparatus, (b) generates a background image based on the image, and (c) detects a foreground object using the image and the background image, to:
 determine a type of detection processing which is to be performed; and 
 set a wait time from a start of generation of the background image to a start of detection processing related to the foreground object, 
 wherein the wait time is determined according to the type of the detection processing to be performed, and the wait time is determined according to a length of a time in which the detection of the foreground object is to be continued in the type of detection processing.
