Method and system to dynamically authenticate and grant access to non-trusted anonymous Wi-Fi

Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, identifying a request from a portable device for authentication to a first WLAN, wherein the user is not registered as a WLAN user. An identifier of the device is compared with entries in a list associated with the WLAN and, responsive to a first determination that the identifier corresponds to an entry in the list, wireless access is using the first WLAN facilitated. Responsive to a second determination that the identifier does not correspond to an entry in the list, a message is transmitted to equipment of the network subscriber regarding the request. Responsive approval of the request, wireless access is facilitated of the device to a broadband network using the first WLAN, wherein the portable device provides a second WLAN for initiating a second communication session via the device that provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A method comprising:
 receiving, by a processing system including a processor, a request from a portable wireless access point of a requesting user for authentication to a first wireless local area network (WLAN) for initiating a first communication session via an access point of the first WLAN, wherein the requesting user is not registered as a user of the access point, and wherein the request includes an identifier associated with the requesting user; 
 comparing, by the processing system, the identifier with entries in a list included in a profile of a network subscriber associated with the access point; 
 responsive to a first determination that the identifier corresponds to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, facilitating, by the processing system, wireless access of the portable wireless access point to a broadband network using the first WLAN; 
 responsive to a second determination that the identifier does not correspond to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, transmitting, by the processing system, a message to equipment of the network subscriber regarding the request; and 
 responsive to receiving, by the processing system, approval of the request from the equipment of the network subscriber, facilitating, by the processing system, wireless access of the portable wireless access point to the broadband network using the first WLAN, 
 wherein the wireless access to the broadband network comprises an anonymous communication session between the portable wireless access point and a broadband network device of the broadband network, and 
 wherein the portable wireless access point provides a second WLAN for initiating a second communication session via the portable wireless access point that provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices. 
 
     
     
       2. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the second communication session via the portable wireless access point provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices utilizing the first WLAN and without utilizing a mobile cellular network. 
     
     
       3. The method of  claim 2 , wherein the anonymous communication session is facilitated by way of a virtual private network between the portable wireless access point and the broadband network device, wherein network traffic of the second communication session is exchanged between the portable wireless access point and the broadband network device utilizing the virtual private network. 
     
     
       4. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the identifier comprises a media access control address. 
     
     
       5. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the request from the equipment of the requesting user comprises a personal message, and wherein the transmitting of the message to the equipment of the network subscriber further comprises the personal message. 
     
     
       6. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the wireless access of the portable wireless access point to the broadband network using the first WLAN is subject to a restriction based on a time value. 
     
     
       7. The method of  claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the processing system, a fee-sharing between an operator of the first wireless local area network and a broadband service provider based on a utilization of the second communication session. 
     
     
       8. A system comprising:
 a processing system including a processor; and 
 a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
 detecting a request from a portable device of a requesting user for authentication to a first wireless local area network (WLAN) for initiating a first communication session via an access point of the first WLAN, wherein the requesting user is not registered as a user of the access point, and wherein the request includes an identifier associated with the requesting user; 
 comparing the identifier with entries in a list included in a profile of a network subscriber associated with the access point; 
 responsive to a first determination that the identifier corresponds to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, facilitating wireless access of the portable device to a broadband network using the first WLAN; 
 responsive to a second determination that the identifier does not correspond to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, transmitting a message to equipment of the network subscriber regarding the request; and 
 responsive to receiving approval of the request from the equipment of the network subscriber, facilitating wireless access of the portable device to the broadband network using the first WLAN, 
 wherein the wireless access to the broadband network comprises an anonymous communication session between the access point and a broadband network device of the broadband network, and 
 wherein the portable device provides a second WLAN for initiating a second communication session via the portable device that provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices. 
 
 
     
     
       9. The system of  claim 8 , wherein the second communication session via the portable device provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices utilizing the first WLAN and without utilizing a mobile cellular network. 
     
     
       10. The system of  claim 9 , wherein the anonymous communication session is facilitated by way of a virtual private network between the portable device and the broadband network device, wherein network traffic of the second communication session is exchanged between the portable device and the broadband network device utilizing the virtual private network. 
     
     
       11. The system of  claim 8 , wherein the identifier comprises a media access control address. 
     
     
       12. The system of  claim 8 , wherein the request from the equipment of the requesting user comprises a personal message, and wherein the transmitting of the message to the equipment of the network subscriber further comprises the personal message. 
     
     
       13. The system of  claim 8 , wherein the wireless access of the portable device to the broadband network using the first WLAN is subject to a restriction based on a time value. 
     
     
       14. The system of  claim 8 , further comprising determining, by the processing system, a fee-sharing between an operator of the first wireless local area network and a broadband service provider based on a utilization of the second communication session. 
     
     
       15. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
 identifying a request from a portable device of a requesting user for authentication to a first wireless local area network (WLAN) for initiating a first communication session via an access point of the first WLAN, wherein the requesting user is not registered as a user of the access point, and wherein the request includes an identifier associated with the requesting user; 
 comparing the identifier with entries in a list associated with the access point; 
 responsive to a first determination that the identifier corresponds to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, facilitating wireless access of the portable device to a broadband network using the first WLAN; 
 responsive to a second determination that the identifier does not correspond to an entry in the list, based on the comparing, transmitting a message to equipment of a network subscriber regarding the request; and 
 responsive to receiving approval of the request from the equipment of the network subscriber, facilitating wireless access of the portable device to the broadband network using the first WLAN, 
 wherein the wireless access to the broadband network comprises an anonymous communication session between the portable device and a broadband network device of the broadband network, and 
 wherein the portable device provides a second WLAN for initiating a second communication session via the portable device that provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices. 
 
     
     
       16. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of  claim 15 , wherein the second communication session via the portable device provides broadband access to a plurality of Wi-Fi enabled devices utilizing the first WLAN and without utilizing a mobile cellular network. 
     
     
       17. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of  claim 16 , wherein the anonymous communication session is facilitated by way of a virtual private network between the portable device and the broadband network device, wherein network traffic of the second communication session is exchanged between the portable device and the broadband network device utilizing the virtual private network. 
     
     
       18. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of  claim 15 , wherein the request from the equipment of the requesting user comprises a personal message, and wherein the transmitting of the message to the equipment of the network subscriber further comprises the personal message. 
     
     
       19. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of  claim 15 , wherein the wireless access of the portable device to the broadband network using the first WLAN is subject to a restriction based on a time value. 
     
     
       20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of  claim 15 , further comprising determining, by the processing system, a fee-sharing between an operator of the first wireless local area network and a broadband service provider based on a utilization of the second communication session.
