In-situ formed intervertebral fusion device and method
Abstract
An orthopedic device for implanting between adjacent vertebrae comprising: an arcuate balloon and a hardenable material within said balloon. In some embodiments, the balloon has a footprint that substantially corresponds to a perimeter of a vertebral endplate. An inflatable device is inserted through a cannula into an intervertebral space and oriented so that, upon expansion, a natural angle between vertebrae will be at least partially restored. At least one component selected from the group consisting of a load-bearing component and an osteobiologic component is directed into the inflatable device through a fluid communication means.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1. A spinal fusion implant comprising:
a first component having a groove formed therein and having an upper bone contacting surface;
a second component having a ridge extending therefrom and having a lower bone contacting surface; and
first and second ramped surfaces adapted to slide along one another to progressively increase a distance between the upper and lower bone contacting surfaces and thereby distract a disc space in which the spinal fusion implant is disposed;
wherein the ridge is slidably received within the groove to guide relative movement of the first and second components as the first and second ramped surfaces slide along one another.
2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein sliding the first ramped surface along the second ramped surface in a first direction is effective to increase a height of the spinal fusion implant and sliding the first ramped surface along the second ramped surface in a second, opposite direction is effective to reduce the height of the spinal fusion implant.
3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein a medial portion of the first component has a height that is greater than a height of lateral portions of the first component.
4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first component includes an opening formed therein to permit bony fusion therethrough.
5. A spinal fusion method, comprising:
positioning an implant in a disc space defined between an upper vertebra and a lower vertebra, the implant comprising (i) a first component having a groove formed therein and having an upper bone contacting surface that contacts the upper vertebra, (ii) a second component having a ridge extending therefrom and having a lower bone contacting surface that contacts the lower vertebra, and (iii) first and second ramped surfaces, the implant being positioned such that the ridge is slidably received within the groove; and
sliding the first and second ramped surfaces along one another to progressively increase a distance between the upper and lower bone contacting surfaces and thereby distract the disc space;
wherein the ridge and the groove guide relative movement of the first and second components as the first and second ramped surfaces slide along one another.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first component and second component each have a height that is less than a height of the disc space.
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first and second components are positioned to extend transversely across the disc space.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
