Abstract

Data state rollover is performed based on data state snapshots and deltas. A series of snapshots is taken of the current data state, an original data state, and data states in between. Deltas are then generated between two sequential snapshots. This results in numerous deltas which represent the difference between consecutive snapshots. Once the deltas are acquired, the deltas may be stored along with the snapshot of the present data state. As such, previous data states may be rolled back to by determining the number of deltas to apply to the current data state to achieve the desired previous data state. In cases where the rollback or rollover fails, deltas may be played against the current data state to a point where the last known trusted and working data point existed.

Claims

1 . (canceled)

2 . A method for performing a data state rollback, the method comprising:
receiving a request to rollback a current data state of a computing system to a desired state, wherein the desired state corresponds to a state of the computing system at a particular moment in time; retrieving rollback data, wherein the rollback data retrieved includes delta data that identifies changes between data from a previous data state to data from a current data state; and playing back the deltas against the data from the current data state to the desired state, wherein the playing back of the deltas against the current data state change the current state of the computing system to the desired state.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising identifying a number of deltas to apply to the current data state to change the current state of the computing system to the desired state before the deltas against the current data state are played back.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein data corresponding to the current data state includes is in a first format and data corresponding to the desired state is in a second format.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the second format of the data is consistent with data from a non-relational database and the first format of data is consistent with data from a relational database.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the rollback data include data from a snapshot.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein data from the current data state is configured in a new data format, and an application program receives data corresponding to the current data state in an old data format.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the deltas are time stamped.

9 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor for performing a method of rolling back a data state, the method comprising:
receiving a request to rollback a current data state of a computing system to a desired state, wherein the desired state corresponds to a state of the computing system at a particular moment in time; retrieving rollback data, wherein the rollback data retrieved includes delta data that identifies changes between data from a previous data state to data from a current data state; and playing back the deltas against the data from the current data state to the desired state, wherein the playing back of the deltas against the current data state change the current state of the computing system to the desired state.

10 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , the program further executable to identify a number of deltas to apply to the current data state to change the current state of the computing system to the desired state before the deltas against the current data state are played back.

11 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein data corresponding to the current data state includes is in a first format and data corresponding to the desired state is in a second format.

12 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the second format of the data is consistent with data from a non-relational database and the first format of data is consistent with data from a relational database.

13 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the rollback data include data from a snapshot.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein data from the current data state is configured in a new data format, and an application program receives data corresponding to the current data state in an old data format.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the deltas are time stamped.

16 . An apparatus for performing a data state rollback, the apparatus comprising:
a memory; a processor that executes instructions out of the memory to: retrieving rollback data, wherein:
the rollback data retrieved is based on a request to roll back a current data state of a computing system to a desired state,
the desired state corresponds to a state of the computing system at a particular moment in time, and
the retrieved rollback data includes delta data that identifies changes between data from a previous data state to data from the current data state; and
playing back the deltas against the data from the current data state to the desired state, wherein the playing back of the deltas against the current data state change the current state of the computing system to the desired state.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein a number of deltas to apply to the current data state to change the current state of the computing system to the desired state are identified before the deltas against the current data state are played back.

18 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein data corresponding to the current data state includes is in a first format and data corresponding to the desired state is in a second format.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the second format of the data is consistent with data from a non-relational database and the first format of data is consistent with data from a relational database.

20 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the rollback data include data from a snapshot.

21 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein data from the current data state is configured in a new data format, and an application program receives data corresponding to the current data state in an old data format.
